Classic High School Story

Man, back in my senior year of high school about 2 years ago, i had just gotten my 85 305 Berinletta. It was kinda ragged, with ****ty suspension, all stock under the hood, and a horrible drivers door, not to mention shot exhaust and mismatched Pontiac wheels. Well this dude, John, had the attenion of everyone in his 99 Mustang GT, Cobra hood, Flowmaster muffler and tinted windows, wheels, and grill, and i think like a K&N filter. Everyone in my class thought this car was hot stuff. when I first got my Maro, he told me he'd smoke me anyday. Well, I took him up on the challenge, and told him Id do it someday. He told me the next Friday afternoon, in the lower parking lot, after school. I said sure, why not, I had nothing to lose, everything to gain.

Well, my cous got wind of this and had to make sure the Camaro smoked the Mustang, so he told me to drag the Camaro over to his house for a weekend Hot Rodding project. In that weekend, we put a Vic Jr. Intake, Edelbrock 650cfm carb, pulled all smog and A/C stuff off and ran true duals into cherry bombs that stopped under my seats. We finished it off with all body work done, including a replacement door and a sweet black primer job and my new set of 15 Z28 wheels with some serious fat rubber on them. My last mod came that Wednesday afternoon with the installation of my Monroe struts, SensTrac shocks, and my brand new B&M MegaShifter.

I didnt drive the car the entire week and Friday pulled up to school last. when that afternoon hit, he was still talking crap about my car and i told him to pull the 50 bucks out. He asked me where my car was and I told him to get to the line cause he was about to race a real Camaro. I pulled up beisde him, TFATF style, revving and he looked over and his jaw dropped, it was truly hilarious. So, we lined them up, and I was seriously holding my RPMS high and man, that was the greatest day of my teenage life, cause when I launched, all his buddies allmost crapped themselves when I beat him off the line by like a car length and he was beginning to catch up but the Camaro slowly but surely pulled away and I ended up beating him by like 2 car lengths. I relish that moment to this day, cause after that I had some serious compliments come my way on that ride. Now the car is on its way to the junkyard after I stripped it down and am using its parts to rebuild my newest acquisition, an 82 T-Top. sigh, those were the days.

Gotta go with rx7speed... the guy was either a really crappy driver (quite possible) or your story is .

I'm assuming you had an LG4 (if you had an L69, the story seems a little more legitamate). LG4's are 155hp/245ft/lbs dogs in their stock form... compared with the 260HP/300-something ft/lbs of the 99 GT. Perhaps slightly more with the mild mods that you mentioned.

Even though you did add some much needed mods to that 85's engine, it still doesn't seem like it would have added enough power to beat the GT. Exhaust will give you a pretty heft performance boost, but a new carb and intake is pretty much useless when the car is breathing through the straw that is the stock air cleaner. The MegaShifter probably helped a bit, but not that much. Shocks and struts are a great mod, but I'm pretty sure they don't add any power to the car.

Sorry... I'm not trying to be an ***, it just seems like your story is a little far-fetched. Like I said before, the guy could have just been a terrible driver (or maybe it wasn't a GT but a V6 after all ).

If you run 13s with that car Id believe it, or if the Mustang owner couldnt drive (most likely the case right there). Still a good read!

Well, the motor wasnt the original 305 in the car i know that, it was an older 305 maybe mid 70s. Never figuredo ut why someone would do a motor swap and then hook all the Smog crap back up but anyways, the Mustang was the 4.6L V8. As for beating him, I asked someone who was there and he said I got him by about a car and a half. The thing about the shocks and struts was that it stiffened my weak suspension up, which made planting the power much easier. As for the stock air cleaner bit, I threw that away first. I went out and got a K&N 9 inch open element air filter.

As for parting it out, well, last Labor Day weekend at our local track, I raced the car and blew the motor, as in numerous lifters are ticking away and a rod is knocking, so its shot, which sucks. I know it does sound unbelievable but you have to remember this was back in high school and the fact that I had already had a few races at a 1/4 mile dragstrip under my belt while all he had done was a few races like this, plus my dad used to have a 66 Chevelle SS396 and he used to race it at a 1/4 mile track so when I learned to drive, I picked up a few "bad habits" from him lol. Anyways thanks for reading.

Well, its an 1/8th mile track and its best time is 8.94 @78.69 MPH....Not really impressive but it was a really worn out motor too. Now as for my dads old Chevelle, he doesnt have any of the slips but he told me the best he ever got it to do was 11.52@???MPH. The cool thing was it had a pretty much mainly stock 396SS motor, it was dynoed at 465-470 horses (been a long long time) but the cool thing was it had a sweet 4 speed tranny, Ive never seen a M21 shiftl ike that so I assume it was aftermarket. Anyways, back to the Camaro, yeah it wasnt the fastest but it was my little hotrod.....till it blew sky high that is.

Must have been a real long time, cause there isnt any way in hell a mostly stock 396 is gonna get 465-470. There is gonna be some pretty stout modifications made to a 396 to get it there.

Well, it had lots and lots of bolt ons man, a dual carb intake, with i believe dual Carters (not sure), true dual exhaust, headers, HEI and i think that was about it, main thing i know was it was my inspiration to get into hot rodding and especially Chevrolet.

I can appreciate the motivation, sounds like a really cool car, its just that that is far from stock, thats why i said that. I've always wanted to build an engine like that, but everytime I talk to someone with dual 4BBLs the tell me not to do it, stick with a single.

HOLY crap! You went an 8.94 in the 1/8th !!!!! That's friggin quick for a TPI thirdgen. I know of a few modded ones that are shy of that time (intake, cams, hedders, prom work). I totally believe the kill if that's the case. GK man.

I wish i had it on vid man been one for the ages. Anyways, the Camaro wasnt TPI man, it was a carbed car, its best time was also its last time lol, cause I was dumb and had to learn the hard way, stock motors dont take Nitrous too well, and it was only a 100 shot of Nitrous man, borrowed the whole setup from my buddy, who had it in his 88 t-top camaro and when he wrecked it he kept the set up, so after i blew my motor, all that work taking it all back out sucked, lol. I had to learn the hard way. I hit the button and man it was cool feeling that burst of speed but then it sucked when these noises come out of the motor. Mostly, the Camaro ran like 9.30's-9.60's and it wasnts all that great but mainly I let my cousin race it cause he could always pull up and get these cocky people, mostly imports, to race him for money, cause they always laughed at how raggedy it was and stuff, with the blue hood and door and they all had their cool little wanna be TFATF cars, so when he would beat them, they always wanted to see under the hood and he said another day, another dollar, hehe, course, since it was my car, i got some share of the cash but anyways, Ive kind of taking a liking to the 305, cause its underrated, nowadays u can take a 305, put a Stroker kit in it and do some mods and make them quick, so Im stickin with the 305 for now until I can get my hands on a 400 small block, but thanks for ther replies.
