SS454 goes down
Well I finally got the inspection sticker for my car so I can start driving regularly now. So last night I decided just to cruise the car around for a while to get a feel for it. This is the first time ive driven it for more than 5mins or so. I was finally headed home when this black 454ss truck pulls up next to me rumbling pretty nice and he rolls down the window and I realized it was a friend of mine from high school auto tech. So we pull into a gas station and talk for a while and he tells me what he has in it.
original 454 tbi engine converted to carb
750 dp carb
Peformer RPM intake
1.7 roller rockers
Higher stall(guy befor him put it in he didnt know exact size)
4.10 gears
4-6 drop on 295x60 rear tires
headers into true dual high flow cats and flowmasters.
So we decided to line up at a light for a friendly little run and heres how it went down.
First time: light turn green i took off without spin and he spun a good amount we went to about 70 and I had him by about 2 cars.
Second: We both took off about even and I beat him by about 5ft.
Third: he launched real hard and I spun slightly, we were neck and neck and I couldnt tell who one. He says he did.
Well he followed me home and now my car is running like crap for some reason So I am a little upset. I think I did pretty good considering I am now running a 2.73 peg leg rear with 275x60 tires. So I defenetly need better gears. So do you think the race went about how it should or should I have beat him worse or vice versa. I am actually a little disapointed, but then again I do have the crappy gears. I think my setup should run high 13's with 3.42 gears what do you guys think.

I ran into him again today at the store and he said that he wasnt even getting on it in first because hell spin all the way through it. He also said he was feathering the gas at the start of second gear. So that dissapoints me even more. If his car could hook he probably would have beat me. Oh well i guess its time for a new rear and maybe a couple other things

Sounds like a nice run. There's a guy in town that has a black 454 SS truck that acts all cocky all the time. I hope I can take him when I get the LT1 running. What gears do you have now?

You should defenetly be able to take a stock or even mildly modified one with the Lt1. I think they run high 15's bone stock if that. Right now I am running a limited slip with 2.73's I used to have a 3.08 posi rear that I took out of a friend of mines firebird but I blew that before I swapped in the new motor so I put my original 2.73 rear in, and with those tall tires I am running its really killing my low end. On a good note though I can cruise at 45mph in 2nd gear at around 2500 rpms.
