TBI suggestions
Evening guys, I have scrapped the idea of rebuilding the LO3. I have a 400 SBC on the engine stand as we speak. Bored .040 over (i know that is the max). Looking into heads and cam and was wondering if I could get TBI to work on this motor? Will the TBI mods on a TBI from the SS454 handle it or do I need something bigger/better? It will be street driven, not an everyday car though, and see the track maybe a couple times a season for fun. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks..

Re: TBI suggestions
The answer is "it depends."
I've read the 2" bores from the 454 flow 660 CFM. Which is enough to flow a 400 at 6700 rpms at 83% volumetric efficiency PROVIDED the intake plenum is large enough. A dual plane manifold would probably be out of the question, you'd need a single plane manifold, probably with a spacer too.
And that doesn't even get to the fun point of can you get injectors that are big enough to fuel this crazy thing, but small enough to idle worth a damn.
It's gonna be complicated, it depends a lot on the power you want to make. But hey, GM bolted that TBI on a 454 so it has to work to some extent.

I do not know the hp of it. It will have a lot to do with the heads and cam I pick. I like fuel injection, but can I get it to work? Maybe a carb would be a better choice? TPI?

Check this out.

The dctrumpet is a board member & e-bay power seller of throttle body
parts.
I decided to keep the TBI control system in place, and upgrade
the throttle body, and ECM. I hope to get it running next year.
There's lots of good info available here, so get ready to read a lot.
Expertise is also available, but can be a bit persnickety if the answers
are available from the stickies.
In summary, the TPI system is intended for torque, and falls flat above
5500k. TBI has some versatility advantages, like manifold options,
but is rather capacity limited -- 650 cfm is pretty much a structural limitation.
Good luck, and keep us posted.
