Stock Mazda 6 just barely takes me

I got to test my wares against one of the new Mazda 6's (sixes, not the 6s) tonight. I think it was the hatchback, I'm not sure. We shot off from around 60 on the highway. We seemed pretty much even, but as the speed got higher, he started walking away. We cut out at around 100 and he was about a half-length in front of me.

I'm actually pretty impressed I got that good of a race. The weather was perfect for the carb, and I have a couple small upgrades here and there, but I was pretty sure this guy would take me no problem. Looks like the ol' LG4 still has a few fights left in her.

What small upgrades do you have? Are any of the mazda 6's available with a turbo, or are they just n/a?

One of my best friends has a Mazda 6 the one you raced was probably an auto like his but damn they can still pull. I never really got to race him before he left for the navy but im not tryin to hate on you but unless ur 305 is heavily modded the guys engine probably wasnt broken in yet. After they break in man they are quick 220hp and a stock auto can run mid 15s some guys w/ 5spds have tapped into the 14s stock. None come from the factory turbo yet. Im almost positive mazdaspeed is making a 6 that is turboed i just dunno when its comin out. Good Job tho, way to hang with him.

what do you have done to your LG4, and what gears do you have?

i dont know about "heavily modded". my LG4 with only free mods and a catback runs mid 15s, so if your projected times are right (not saying they arent, but i dont know anything about these cars) i should run door to door with one and i certainly dont have any serious mods

It was probably the 4-cylinder 6i, because I've been in a 6s and it would have blown my doors off. The one I raced was definitely an auto.

JDizzle: not feeling any hate here; I didn't expect to win to begin with. We just looked at each other doing about 60 and both gunned it.

nick418: I'm fast approaching 166000 miles. Go LG4!

phoenix305: I'm thinking about rebuilding the 305; what have you done to yours?

And for those asking what's modded on the car, I have all new ignition parts as of April or May; Delco plugs, Bosche 8mm wires, MSD cap rotor and HO coil. I haven't switched out the module yet as I'm still wondering what to do with the carb (stay computer controlled or not). An Optima Redtop battery and Powermaster 140amp alternator are keeping everything running smooth. I swapped on a dual snorkel air cleaner assembly with a fresh K&N about 2 weeks ago. And as the car sits right now, there's no muffler and all of the interior behind the front seats is out. Everything else performance-wise is stock, including 2.73 gears.

They come with two engines, a 4 banger not worth mentioning, and a DOHC 3.0 V6 based off the Taurus/Sable/Escape/LS engine. Those are rated at only 200HP. But with the Mazdas intake tuning and VTEC, they up the power to 220. Combine that with a manual trans and a fairly low curb weight and they make a peppy car.

The ZOOM ZOOM sticker mod seems to be quite popluar. While it may not add another 20hp and give Ferrari like handling, the drivers seem to think it does

i have edelbrock performer intake, edelbrock performer carb, roller tip rockers 1.5's, hooker headers, hooker aero chamber exhaust, 50,000 volt coil, 8mm spark plug wires, summit racing cam (i would have to go find the card if you want the specs), and its bored .030 over. its pretty fast but just two days ago some idiot lady pulled out in front of me and my pride and joy got smashed i am super pissed right now luckly no damage to the engine but plenty to the body so we will see what happens.

Ah crap.... I hope it wasn't one of those insurance fraud accidents. You know the ones... some jerk with a crap car and upgraded brakes pulls in front of you and slams the brakes hard. Might want to check juuuuuuust in case.

This is definitely why I'm working on suspension and brakes first. I like fast on a daily driver, but you gotta be able to control it with all the idiots lolligagging about the highways.
