Are they really crushing cars? I thought it was just a bunch of internet B.S.

Even though I don't like people endangering the lives of others, I'd vote against this law. As an import driver, I've seen too many people get pulled over/harassed/ticketed for absolutely no reason. It'd be a pretty ****ty day to have your car crushed just becuase some cop had a prejudice about what kind of car you drove. Just the other day someone posted up a story about getting a fix it ticket because the police officer couldn't see his shoulder. He said he thought he was using his seat improperly.

I just looked at the link, it looks like the car was already totalled to begin with, but they also could have just started taking pictures late.

i seen this posted somewhere else, kid was caught street racing. Very serious problem where he was located. some people got killed over the past few years or something and now cops are going out and busting racers very harshly. some mustangs were also crushed.

They should just sell the car and not destroy it. Such a waste. The owner is just gonna get pissed off and get another one and probly keep on racing. LOL

Its real, in LA they passed a law that if you get caught street racing they may crush your car. That IROC was the first car crushed under the new law. Totally for shock value if you ask me, seems a bit extreme.

What a bunch of left wing/coast BS! When will they learn? Much like the gun issue, it's not the car that causes the street racing, it's the driver. Punish the driver, not the car

California!

Yep, this is so much BS. Let's take bets on how many people with DUI's get their cars crushed. I'll start first. NONE!

Because we all know that drunk drivers don't kill anyone compared to street racers.

theres a guy in PA that got 30 f$cking DUI's and they only then took his license away. Damn car wasnt crushed and he could have killed more people than most street races.

Cars dont kill people, people kill people!

heres a part of the article

Task Force Cracks Down On Illegal Street Racing
KNBC-TV
LOS ANGELES - Police in Van Nuys arrested 11 people in connection with street racing and plan to destroy the two of cars seized from racers, police said Wednesday.

"When we tell them if they race here, we're going to crush their cars, it gets their attention," Los Angeles police Detective Robert Graybill said.

"And that's all we want to do," Graybill said. "We want these kids to enjoy their cars ... have a good time, but we want them to be safe and we don't want to lose any kids like we recently have."

Police found 35 carloads of people assembled for races in the 8000 block of Haskell Avenue Tuesday night.

Two Ford Mustangs were confiscated, it was reported. On Friday, two Village Christian School seniors were killed in a high-speed, head-on collision police have blamed on racing.

The Chevrolet Camaro Nicholas Roth and Christopher Oliver, both 17, were riding in was going roughly 90 mph when it crossed onto the wrong side of La Tuna Canyon Road and struck a pickup truck head-on about 2:15 p.m. that day, police said.

That same day, a Pasadena High School student died in a crash adjacent the campus.

From the sound of it, i guess the two kids in the camaro died, and the car is totalled, so what message are they sending if they crush a totalled car, with owner dead?

the camaro that hit the truck wasn't the one that was smashed, I saw the news video it wasn't a show car but it was definitly a straight body when they dropped a steel plate from a crane on it

it had the POS rims on it anyway and it looked like it said RS on the side molding.

yes it is stupid that they want to crush cars for racing. I got a ticket for racing and I didn't the stupid stock mustang guy next to me decided to nail it at the light and of course the cop pulls me over screeming. if it was anywere else but there that cop would have had a differant issue to deal with

I think impounding the car and selling it to the highest bidder would be a better choice - at least then, the local government can make a few bucks off if it, rather then pay some dude to smash it up. Plus, some guy might score a sweet deal on a car that's already built up! Of course, then you have to figure out what exactly you have under the hood of your new toy...

And then, when they DID smash it, it was all staged, and the press had front row seats. They were probably thinking htat a public-viewed demonstration of the State's power would frighten the kids into not street-racing and obeying the law. Yeah, right. It probably made them even more determined to buck the system and they'll sure as hell not vote for any encumbents for the next elections. Way to go. I can see more of these stupid laws passing, actually, in other states. More of the 'cars kill people' just like 'guns kill people' mentallity.

To me, that law seems devoid of any and all economic reasoning. I'm pretty sure the confiscation and subsequent auctioning of given violators vehicle would have a much more emotional and psychological effect on both the owner and the community, not to mention making the government some cash on the sides that they could divert elsewhere, where needed.

Well, they have just created a different problem. Now the street racers will try to run from the police to keep there cars instead of just getting a ticket and fine.

How many people will get killed because of high speed chases??? I say they should impound the cars and sell them, or make the owner return it to stock form. Then they can make the owner have a new inspection every month or two.

That would seem smarter than crushing the car.

This thread has run its course and no longer focuses on the 3rd gen. If you are outraged by this then petition, go to law school or do whatever you can to change it. Complaining about it won't do a thing.
