Raced an RX7 (older one) the other night

like the topic says, I raced an older RX7 the other night. Here is how the story went.

My buddy Bernie drives a VW Golf. He has a little bit of work done to his car. We opened up the intake, increased the exhaust, chipped and tuned it. Also bored out the Throttle Body cuz the stock throttle body had the diameter of a Toonie (for all you canadian members out there). Well his car got faster and my buddy loves to race other cars.

Well this I am gonna say 1990ish RX7 pulls beside him at a stoplight and heard my friends lound exhaust (APC FART CAN) and reved at him so my buddy revs back. The light turns green and they both go. Bernie didn't do to bad but in the end the RX7 came out the winner. Bernie gave the guy a thumbs up and instead the RX7 guy gave him the finger. Real winner here right.

Well 2 nights ago, I get my transam back from the mechanic...yeah she has a new set of tricks in her now lemme tell ya. Still the same 305, however I took alot of yoru advice and put the 305TPI heads on and I bought an LT1 cam from a member from this site and had that baby installed. We redid the intake and put a 454 throttle body on it and my mechanic did all the work to make everything work and then I had it tuned by a local shop here. Its putting out 265hp at the back tires which is 15hp more then I was aiming for.

ANYWHO!!! I was out driving with my upgraded toy when this same RX7 pulls beside me at one of the lights on lakeshore and revs at me. Now I am not big into the street racing scene as too much can go wrong however I knew that this was the jerk that was a tool to my buddy so I have to giver a go. I didn't hear a blow off valve so I knew this thing couldn't be turbo'd. I did hear the delay suck sound so I knew he had a cold air intake of some fashion. Big Fartcan on his car too...coulda been a catback system but who knows.

Well we rev back and fourth...light turned green and he took me off the light cuz my back tires spun until I let off for a second...didn't take me long to catch up and then I just hammered down and pulled on him hard. I figured his car was a 5spd and he seriously sucked at driving cuz the speed drops between shifts on his end were rediculous.

So in the end I beat him. He pulled into the timmies that I was going to so me being the good sport I got out of my car, walked over to him and told him good race and instead of him biting his pride and saying "yeah you to"...he decides to trash me and trash my car by calling me a ******* gino and thrashing my car and such. I just laughed and told him "hey its not your cars fault you lost...it was the inexperienced driver behind the wheel. Have a nice night".

So thats my exciting new kill story with my new mods. Thanks to all the members here who steered me in the right direction and enforced junkyard shopping for parts and the classifieds section on this site. I think without these simple and cheap mods that RX7 would have eaten my poor T/A for breakfast.

Good kill

first off want to say that guy was a ***** and good job at kicking some wankel butt

though by 90's what body style like mine or little more round shaped arther then sharp cornered?

also if you did hear sucking noise and he had a catback almost makes me wonder if he did have a turbo (in which case even better for kicking his bum cause the guy was a ***** ) with my car and my home made cai and stock mufflers with a header I can't hear my intake at all. car is too damn loud to hear that small little noise of the intake system unless I really pay attention to it but again that is inside the car also. if it was like my body style though (see sig) and it had a hood scoop it was prolly turbo if no hood scoop prolly not turbo.
as far as him handing you your bum without your mods he might of but I doubt it. more of a drivers race I would say. granted I have taken a few tbi's around here but most of them are in typical thirdgen fasion beat up old white trash or beaner cars. no offence to the hispanics or white ppl (hey I'm white) but I'm refering to your low class type of either of those races.
as far as the rpms dropping so much. if I shift mine at 7000-7400rpms they drop to damn near 3900-4200rpms. so the drop is there just due to the spacing of the gears.
also with the blow off valve on the stock system it doesn't open vent to the atmosphere so it is fairly quiet system if I remember right ( been a while since I heard a stock one around here since the slowest turbo rx7 I know of is low 14's high 13's and the fastest in the 11's not counting the rx7 with the 1jz supra motor in it about 20 miles from me)

still want to congrats to you though for kicking little ricers butt.
give the thumbs up win or lose man if you have too much shame for losing then don't race and if your going to be a ***** for winning racing isn't for you either

btw what is a gino?

Good kill man!

Yeah guys sounds like a ***** and I hate people like that. His car does sound liek a turbo car, cause my buddies non-turbo RX7 is super quiet and he has a CAI, header-back exhaust and a beefier clutch. His is super quiet...then again, he's always fun to play with

Good kill and have fun in that little 305 beast

How much horse power do those older RX7's put out anyway?

Also I wouldn't call him a *****...I woudl just call him a guy with a bad attitude and no respect for others. His car looked stock minus the european style taillights and the big cannon hanging out the end...other then that it was stock exterior. Nice car don't get me wrong but the driver was a tardball.

So you say a Stock L03 should beable to take an older RX7 no problem turbo or N/A? I know when my car was stock that it was quite the torquer off the line but had next to no pull from about 3500 to redline...gonna blame that on the heads and the nice round cam shaft. I find with those simple and cheap mods of heads and cam that my car pulls hard now throughout the entire RPM range so it helped alot. Also forgot to mention that my tranny was rebuilt and the rear end was replace from a 2.73 pegleg to a 3.73 Posi out of an Iroc Z. Now all I need to do is re-learn how to drive my car and not smoke the tires so bloody much.

tbi shouldn't be able to walk a rx7 without a problem least not the FC which was made 86-91.
it would be more of a drivers race and condition of the car race.

the power for the 86-88 N/A was 146hp at 6500 and 138lbs/ft at 3800rpms
the 89-91 was 160hp and I don't remember the torque off hand
should be good for anywhere of a mid 16 to a mid 15 depending on driver and/or minor mods

turbo was 182hp and 183lbs/ft from 87-88
and 200hp during the 89-91
should be good for a mid 15 to a high 14 depending on driver. I'm going to leave minor mods out here cause turbo minor mod is a big improvement in horsepower

by europe style tail lights are you talking the cromed ones that a lot of ricers put on the car calling euro and such or these style lights http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33716

and I'm taking it you raced one with a body style like mine?

and I still say he is *****. car doesn't make the ***** the bloody ***** I'm better then you cause I won and you suck cause you beat me with your trashy thirdgen is *****

hell many here would call my neighber across the street a ***** cause he has a neon that has a minor body kit and had some graphics but the dude would be the first to admit his car was slow and ran 18's he just likes it cause it looks nice to him and to give him credit he actually did the neon fairly well
just wish I could remember what the other truck was all I know is his supercharger wakes me up everynight with some wet dream

He had the chromy aftermarket ones that you see alot of people dressing up their cars with. They looked ok on his car but you could tell they didn't belong there.

Those are actually pretty impressive numbers for that car. That little 1.3 rotary engine really produces decent power. I have never seen any pics of your ride, you should post one.
