got stomped by a golf!

went for a drive just for the sake of driving earlier, having knee surgery tomorrow morning and won't be able to for a few weeks so figured i'd have a little fun. saw a pretty mean lookin iroc, jacked up, loud, really wide tires on the back, pulled up at a red light and asked him if he wanted to run em. at first he didnt, asked what i had, said he had a stock 305, but i figured what the hell so i let him go first and walked him bad, left him in the dust. comes up behind me at the next light so i lit em up, laid down a good 25 feet of rubber.
so im feelin pretty good, even though it was stock, i really beat this guy bad, go to wash my car and there are 4 or 5 import guys up there shining their rides, so after i finish washing mine i go over, ask a guy in a civic if his car is fast, he says not really but my man over here in the golf would give you a good race. im thinkin this guy is running mid or low 13's and i'd smoke him, so i ask if he wants to give me a run. (thank *** i dont bet lol) he says sure, we get out on the interstate, i hit it at about 40 and hes staying with me on the onramp, we get out on the highway, i put in it 3rd and punch it from about 60, he stays with me to about 70 then i get a laser warning on my escort 8500 so i honked and backed off it. we go up a couple exits, then turn around and do it again, 60 roll, i stayed with him to about 75, soon as his turbo spooled he BAILED OUT. shocked the hell out of me, he had to be running at least mid 12's. did it 3 more times just to be sure lol. so i follow him back to the car wash to see what hes got, had a turbo 6, i dont know much about imports but it looked really nice, said he bought his car for 150 bucks and put about 20k into it. this thing was MEAN. i just wish i'd had my bottle with me, think i could have taken him then. oh well, was fun anyway, maybe next time. by the way, that was the first race i've lost in about 6 months.

A properly tuned VR6 turbo motor can be deadly.

There is only one kind of 6 cylinder motor available to VW's that I know of, and that is the VR6.

It sounds like the guy he raced was in an older Golf that he bought for cheap and modded. I'd guess that he swapped a VR6 motor in and turbocharged it. That would be a sweet set up as older Golfs are light, and a well done turbo VR6 would scream.

He bought the car for $150. It probably needed a lot of work; there is also more to a car than the motor. Plus, people like to exaggerate about cars all the time.

No, you weren't blasted. He was just pointing out that using that as an argument about why a car is better than another car is stupid, which it is.

pretty sure he didnt have nos, said he didnt and i didnt see any under his hood, acted like it though the way we were even to 75 then he just took off. only had one turbo so i guess he just had a bit of lag. didnt even think to ask how much boost he was running but by all the noise it made i'd guess at least 15 psi. the more boost the slower to spool right?

No, boost level has nothing to do with spool times. Well, I guess it will take a little more time for a turbo to get from 7psi to 15psi, but the difference in time is so small that it's hardly measurable.

Turbocharged cars can seem like they're running nitrous because they can be easy on the pedal to stay with you and the turbo is barely spooled, and then as soon as they hit full throttle, it spools all the way, and they get to full power just about instantly...and then proceed to walk you

There's no way he had turbo lag all the way to 75mph, lol

no he had it floored when we went at 60, i could tell from the sound, thing was LOUD, all 3 times it was the same, it wasnt like he just completely boned out soon as we hit 70, just started pullin hard then. id say by the time we hit 90 he had 3 car lengths on me.

those VR-6 turbo golfs can be a handful...in jamaica we got the right hand drive ones straight from germany(300-400lbs less weight than the left hand driven ones) and I used to see quite a few of them with only headers and exhaust run mid to high 12's all day long.

They don't make VR-6 turbo golfs for the US, and you wouldn't put headers on a turbo car to my knowledge. Can you clarify?

sorry if i confused anyone, when i said hedders I should've said turbo hedders...Neuspeed was a european based company that specialized in only european performance cars and they made "high flow" turbo hedders to replace stock ones.

That makes more sense. I'm familar with Neuspeed, I had their springs on my first Integra. About these headers, were they like going from a log style manifold to an equal length or something?

yup, they were kinda like a "shorty" style hedder, much lighter and with slightly bigger pipes. You should be living in Jamaica stu with your love for hondas...back there we could get the whole honda family in the form of genuine Spoon performance machines like type R integras, civics, preludes etc.

Nah, Hondas get stolen too much and attract the wrong kind of crowd, I'm looking for something else I think.

Stu , you got a point there...hondas do get jacked a lot and its pretty much the same problem in most states it seems.
