Looks like I got a race coming down tonight

Well my friend Joe always wondered who would win in a race. My TransAm with the modded L03 or my friends 1996 Mercury Cougar XR7. The XR7 has the 4.6L V8 and its Auto. I raced him last night in my focus and he did beat me but it was by 2.5 car lengths. I think the only reason it wasn't by much was cuz of the auto and Ford is notorious for having crappy automatic tranny's. SO!!! Tonight its on. My 1988 TransAm VS his 1996 Cougar. 305 VS 289 (or whatever the 4.6L is). The race is only for a tim hortons coffee so its no big deal. I will post the results later on. Anyone on here care to say who will win.

Well first off, I gotta tell you the XR7's are slow as crap. That particular 4.6 is a turd. It is the notorious NPI 4.6 that came in the 96-98 GT mustangs, which is slow...very slow. He'll run a 16.0-15.5 and you shouldnt have much problem beating him. Im curious, which TPI heads did you go with? Cast iron L98's, aluminum L98's, LB9/LG4 heads? Just wondering but in any case, as long as you have a good tune, you've given your 305 some much needed improvements....but do 2 things...get some gears!....and get some track times!

Well you were right...the car was a turd. I took him off the line and pulled away from him nicely. He thought my car was stock so I guess it wasn't that fair of a race. I then mentioned all the mods that have been done.

As for the gears my friend told me to get a nice set of 3.73 with a posi rearend and it will make my car a super fun whip to drive. Now to find a place that does this kind of work.

All in all I won...but it was just for fun so its all good.

3.73's will be fine for you. little higher RPM's but your car will feel completely differant. I know in my Mustang my 2.73 posi is a dman turd. with my upcoming 3.73's, It'll feel liek a rocket was attached to it lol.

Good job

those XR7's have abit of pep but nothing much that a modded L03 cant handle

my friend had a 94 i think and has a 96 now i believe. not really sure of the years but he has 2. the 94 was decently quick for a sedan but like i said, it wasnt anything compared to a stang GT of the same years, which also were slow.

and by the way, those XR7s top out at 108mph cuz its governed

The early 90's 5.0 cougars weren't all that slow. My buddy has a bone stock auto one that runs 15 flat. I would be leary in an LO3.
