Raced an LS1 vette, three times *

I raced my buddies LS1 vette tonight. The car show going on had some legal "street racing" setup, with a flagger and everything.

First run we pull up to the line, i clean off my tires with a brief burnout and got the crowd goin. I spun 1st, pedaled it then hit 2nd. He spun 1st , then hooked. I held him off by about 1.5 cars till around 85ish when we shut down. i honestly couldn't beleive it.

2nd run we pull up, crowd was pumped...camaro vs. vette rematch. I figured i was gonna loose. I didn't get to burnout on this one. I stalled it to 2000, spun a bit, got back into it...it hooked then started spinning again and got sideways...hit 2nd gear and held him off behind me by about 2 cars or so. He dead hooked on this run.

Needless to say he was VERY impressed. He is a good driver and has run the car to 13.3's at the strip.

I cant wait to get to the track again, hoping for 12.9xx when i put in the 3.42's that i just picked up. I'm still on the 2.73s right now.

An LS1(LS6) vette will easily trap in the 100's mph in the 1/4. And you dont' so I'm throwing up a huge until you can explain what year this vette was. Cause your saying you spun, and he hooked both times?

The run was about 1/8th mile long. Its a 1999 vette. He spun hard the first time. I spun both. I wouldn't wanna race him in an all out 1/4 mile race unless I'm on ET Streets!

I have done a couple things since last year, and the car runs much better. There were thousands of people watching. What do ya want me to tell ya?

PS look at my 1/8th mile time and tell me if a stock vette comes close to that. i'm sure he'd reel me in once he hits 3rd and 4th gear. trap speed dont mean squat to me, its all about who gets there first

Fair enough, you've rid me of doubt.
Thats one hardcore LB9 you have there then.
Plus I wasn't sure if you were at altitude or not.
I know around here the C5's trap well into the 100's, but they pull up top, and are dogs froma dig, thanks to their IRS.

Not a problem. I think our altitude around here is ~ 1000 ft?. Plus the air was really good last night.

I wouldn't wanna race him from a roll. I'd get spanked. But it was fun none the less and it was a fair race. I had a blast

Nice! Your car is set up pretty good for a race out of the hole...1.7 60' is awesome..you would beat me in the 1/8 and my cars best is 12.8 110mph in the 1/4 with a 2.1 60'...on the street to 80mph the start is HHHUUUUGGGGEEEEE.

I raced him again today. This time we both spun outta the whole, and we both were pedaling it. I had him by about a fender till 50mph. He hit 2nd gear and pulled a half car on me. Shut down at around 85mph. He beat me by about .5 to 3/4 of a car.

Fun race heres a pic! You can see i'm spinning a bit here

It's in downtown Worcester MA (second largest city in the state). Its called the Spirit of America hot rod & bike weekend. We set up organized drag racing and burnout contests, then there were the bike stunts of course.

Everyone is cruising around open headers, cops dont care...awesome time.

Here's my friend in his 10 sec chevelle puttin a hurtin on a thirdgen.

Thats freakin crazy. First of all i gotta say good race...its impressive to see a 3rd gen keep up with, and beat a newer vette. Gives guys like me with a LO3 some street cred...hahahahahaha.

But seriously i would love to drag race down the street, legally, in front of thousands of people like that. That must be insane!!

Stop your making me blush! Did you own a 327? Please tell me about it.

TP355 That stock Tpi is making some killer torque!
Do you think if you upgraded the intake it will run faster?
Or is the way your engine is made best suited for the stock intake? I wonder.

Its 335, lol, and with my cam and large stroke i'm sure an aftermarket intake would help. Stock TPI is probably one of the most restrictive intakes ever for a small block chevy.

Heads are stock untouched LB9 heads with a 3 angle valve job.

I'm keeping this intake cause the car runs fine for now, and is quick, and its my daily driver. I can't afford the downtime. Plus, i'm afraid if i switch to a different intake that its gonna run like crap like all the other ones i've seen.

You're 327 has the advantage, cylinder bore wise. To share a story with you, my cousin was a pretty big Third Generation F-Body buff. He had so freaking many of them, and all of them had their own story to tell.

He had an Iroc with an Olds 425 shoe-horned in it, another Z28 with a 396 Chevy, a Firebird with a 302 Chevy (and some other's that retained the original engine, but were worked). I have to admit, the Iroc with the 425 Olds was my favorite (it was the first time I was in a ten second car, and that's something you never forget)....

Anyways, the Firebird with the 327 (albeit with a 283 crank, equaling 302 cubic inches), was a terror on the freaking street. He ran that sucka with fuel injection first (the car came stock with an LB9 & five speed), carburetion afterward, then back again with fuel injection. Before he got rid of it, it was running a Super-Ram... and it raped many LT1 vette's on the street, that were running in the mid- high 12's at the track.

nice job! your car runs very quick for that trap speed. i think i can get down there if i had some slicks or DR's. but i love handling too so i need the street tire. LOL

yeah TPI is killer on the 1/8 mile if you get it to hook up. vettes arent drag cars, and cant hook well. i held off a C6 hard top till 1000feet where he put about 1-1.5 cars on me at the end of the 1/4mile. beat me by a hundreth second or so, but trapped 8mph more than me LOL

Your 60' and 1/8 times are incredible. How did you manage to find the right setup to pull those short times? I run the same mph in the 1/8 as you but I'm .5 slower :-( This being in the t/a of course.

When i ran the 1.743 sixty foot i was on stock suspension with KYB shocks/struts. Tires were Hoosier Quick Time Pro's @ 17psi. The only mods are for handling, which are Spohn SFC's, hotchkis strut brace, and tds steering brace.

I have since installed a set of Lakewood lower control arms with poly bushings, but havent' been to the track yet.

Thanks guys
