STI Kill

Well, I wasn't driving this time, but I was in the car, so I'll tell the story.

We were on the highway on ramp in my car (see sidebar for info) and we're going about 35 mph. Well, this STI driver is behind us, I had noticed him a little while ago, but neither of us thought anything of it. As we're on the onramp he keeps nailing it, coming up to my bumper and backing off. He does this over and over again and it starts to get REAL annoying. Finally we get onto the entrance of the highway, and he tries to nail and do a flyby. That wasn't happening. Dropped it into 2nd and nailed it, he had gotten the jump obviously and was ahead by about a half a car. By the time we hit 60mph he was back to the quarter panel. We went up to about 90mph and then backed off. By then we had about 2-3 cars on the STI. We slowed down to the flow of traffic again (although there wasn't much) and saw the STI driver. He came by on the passengers side, I tried to give him a serious thumbs up (was a nice car, pulled pretty hard too) but he smiply did a flyby at probably 85 or so and didn't look to happy

The STI seemed to be fairly stock. I heard a blow-off valve however and it sounded a little raspier, so he may have had exhaust and and aftermarket BOV done to it but not much more. Too bad the owner was such a jackass, I wanted to ask him what he had done. Was a fun race though, first real race I've done with this car, too bad I wasn't the driver this time.

It wasn't one of the new hideous ones. Either '04 or '05. I think the reason I got him was because we went from a roll. Had we gone from a dig it would have been a little different probably, but I still might have caught him by 60 or so.

Thanks for the compliments.

W00t. Good job.

The STi is pretty slow from a roll (IMHO). For the record, you can hear my BOV easily. It sounds aftermarket, but it is not. The stock BOV is really loud with an aftermarket intake installed.

Sounds like his car had an exhaust and an intake. Probably about 265whp unless he was tuned.

Those 2007 STI's are one the nicest cars on the road IMO. I think they're new design is awesome and the wheels are sweet.

Nice kill man, and the story was well-written too.

Yeah the 2007 STi is nice, I would like to own one.

Isn't there suppose to be a limited edition STi in 2007 ?

I've actually ridden in one, it was bone stock though other then a turbo back. I couldn't hear the BOV too easily on it, but then again with an aftermarket intake it probably would have been much more apparent. A kid at my school (real cocky kid, thinks he's better then anyone else) has an '04 STI. He has a turbo back, tuning, and a few other things. Before the tuning and everything he put down about 230whp, so 265 sounds about right. I'll agree their slow from a roll, that's not exatly their specialty, nor is it any AWD car's. My dad has an '01 Audi himself. With catback, tuning (running 17psi), and a few other things the car is a beast from launch, from a roll is much different though. Still quick, but that's not where the car really shines.

Thanks. I haven't seen the '07's yet, but I've seen the 06 ones and I honestly can't stand the look of them.

And you shouldn't - rofl. These cars really are dogs from a high speed roll. Now, low speed rolls are a different story entirely. From 10mph my STI is a beast, lol. 20-30mph isn't so bad either. From a highway roll it does fairly well (of course, I do have a bunch of mods with my own custom tuning) but it still isn't what I would call impressive by ANY means (and my car is much quicker than a stock STI). The real problem here is that I am spoiled since my old IROC from a highway roll was ... errrrr ... a little more peppy

Now, to put this in perspective, you ran 103mph in the 1/4. My STI runs 107mph. Stock STIs usually run 100-101mph depending on the driver and altitude and heat (outside temp is a huge impact on a turbo car).

Any idea when you'll be returning to the dark side? I always seem to get a little uneasy whenever I hear you talk about you're STI... as I'm so used to you in you're old Iroc. Come on Tim, quite a few of us are waiting patiently. That mid 11 second run was sweet, but how's about a mid 10 second run (and no, not with the STI)?

It will absolutely happen one day The timing won't be right for years though ... maybe 2 years ... could be 5 (roflmfao). Don't worry, I am still in the thirdgen scene and talk thirdgens almost everyday (albeit not usually here). Love these cars! The STI is just a perfect car for me right now. 4 doors, AWD, great safety, nice power potential, huge brakes, ABS, etc. Great kid transport mobile The STI will be putting down 350whp soon enough which will be nice ... however, definitely know that this in NO WAY takes away from the fact that I really want to get another thirdgen one day.

I'll probably start with a thirdgen shell - no motor or tranny if I can help it. I have lots of ideas for what I want to do. The ONLY thing that will stop me from getting another thirdgen will be if I decide to buy a 1st gen instead

100-101 huh? I'll have to remember that. the 103 trap was on a tire without powershifting. street tires and powershifting i trap 105.6. No wonder i didn't have a problem with the sti LOL

Exactly. Stock STIs from a dig are kinda cool. But, a stock STI from a roll isn't that fast (IMHO). But, then again, TBI guys will think it is 'hella' fast (roflmfao). Overall, a stock STI is equivalent to a 350TPI thirdgen with a Full Exhaust (headers + catback), StealthRam, Intake mods, and some custom wideband AFR tuning and timing tweaks. If you want to catch up to a modified STI then you will need heads/cam or else do everything bolt-on you can think of (1.6 rockers, 52mm TB, weight reduction, etc.)

Also, keep in mind that these cars are 6-speeds where 5th gear is 1:1. Driving an STI very fast means a LOT of shifting. You have to be a good driver. I have seen guys run 97mph in STIs because they can't drive. I've seen guys 102mph in an STI because they beat the heck out of the car.

Yep, I've seen a few run mid 13's around here but at a pretty low trap speed for their time. Obviously due to the AWD hampering them further down the track.

Was a pretty fun race though, only decently fast car that I've run with other then some LS2 GTO I was playing with on the highway, all I've ever gotten was a few riced out Civics, some Neon with a huge wing (not an SRT-4 though), and some POS Saturn.

Well said. My bud just took his stock STI to the track and his best was a 14.1 at 99mph with a 1.8 60'. That isn't too bad since the track prep was horrible, it was 90° out, and he had a little bog from a hard launch. He would cross the traps in 5th gear and trapped no less than 97mph all night. He lined up against an Evo once and the Evo was .1 second quicker. There was another stock STI that ran a 13.7 just a few miles up the road at a different track. He clicked off a 1.7 60' and his trap was 103 I believe. These cars are very fast.

Good kill. I raced an STi from a roll a little while back in my LT1 which runs 13.3-13.4 depending on wheather. I beat him pretty good up to 90+ They are really nice cars and handle very well. They are a little overrated at the strip from what I've seen at our local track IMPO.
