Pre-Load RPM?

You guys with the stock 1600rpm converters (I believe, wimpy nonetheless), at what RPM do you preload to before that light turns green? Just trying to get the best idea that will get me off the line as quickly as humanly possible with the stock converter (Booooo converters...HOOOOORAYYYY T-56!!)

I believe my stock L98 converter would hold the brakes up to about 1200 RPM. It was pretty weak.

Maybe we're on a different page here. Let me clarify.

When you are braking, and waiting for that light to change, what is the optimal RPM to be at for a good launch with a 1600stall converter? I don't know if that "sweetspot" changes with different converters, I would assume it would.

But I mean, I can rev up to about 2500rpm before I start chirping the tires. What is optimal here?

take it as high as you can go without doing a brake stand. Then let off the brakes and ease into the gas! Autos are easy!

Yes it changes with converters. I drove a Nova with a 3500 stall in it, and it would brake stall up to about 3300 before it started chirping them.

I've had good luck just hitting it hard enough off idle before the tires break loose.

I could hold my L98/700r4 to just under 1400.

It'll change with the wear of your converter and even your tire tread, so your best bet is to find an empty back road and practice your launches. Hold the brake and ease on the gas until it starts to spin a little, then let off until its not spinning anymore, and whatever rpm that is, is where you need to be.

stall speed

i always found funny how people think the stall speed, was when the car ingauged, not so the stall # its the flash speed, so the motor, weight, tire size is all a factor. i would do like the guys said just take it out and play with it.
i found on stock stalls just hit it, high stalls i would load them alittle and find the point that worked best.

for what its worth,

rick
