it wasnt as bad as i thought it would be tho. lol

Me and my brother in my 89 Irocz were goin to pick up some stuff for school. i see a red GTO stop to get money out of the bank, while we waited for the red light to turn green. I see the dual exhaust exits and the 6.0 badge, and the hood scoops. thing looks mean. i turn at the light and head on down the road and look behind me to see the GTO speeding up to catch up to me, to my surprise. lol he slows behind me about a car back, and floors it to give me a little flyby. well i punch it as he goes by and then let off as he coasts past...let him know i'll play around

well he gets the message and slows up. we pull up next to each other and both look over and smile. the light up ahead is red, but as we roll next to it, slowing to about 20mph it turns green... so with his nose at about my rear tire, i go for it. lol he is on it immediately..but i cant hear his car over my chambered tube exhaust.

it stays even like that with his nose about at my door/rear tire all thru first gear, till he shifts to second. and from his shift i can tell either he wasnt the best driver in that thing yet, or he was taking me lightly, cuz his shifts were slow.
once he bangs second he starts walkin on me... he crawls past, my nose is now at his door. he shifts for 3rd gear...lots of time between shifts, so my car is hanging with him, and might have closed just a few on him.

he gets that T56 into 3rd and starts pulling again. he gets about a car length on me or so, and looked like he shifted to 4th...but i shut down to turn around and head back to the store. any more and it wouldnt have been pretty. would have kept pulling cars on me. i never looked at the speedo, but i'm pretty sure i got it up to about 70 or so before i shut down.

so i was pretty impressed with my cars performance this afternoon, even with my brothers 150lbs in the car. thats a big difference. so basically from about 15-20mph roll, i can hang somewhat close to a LS2 GTO till about 50-60mph, then its all him on the top end. it took him alot longer to catch me than i thought it would. a Ls1 goat would have been a fun race. and from a dig, i'm sure i would have gotten the early lead on that ls2.

Great story! How did you know it was an Ls2, badge? What, briefly is the diff between a Ls1 & Ls2? My neighbor recently purchased a similiar Goat, just wanted to know a little more about it. thanks.

The LS2s have the GTO 6.0L badges. I think that is the only real exterior visual difference LS1=346ci and 350hp? LS2=364ci and 400hp. A buddy of mine just bought a 06 GTO with the LS2. It is damn quick. He told me he's beaten numerous new GT Mustangs, a SRT-4, and a C5 vette.

Do they both have dual exhaust? you would think with that amount of Hp.

Yes, both cars have a dual exhaust. But the LS2'S exhaust flows much better. The 05 and 06 GTO'S have a ram air hood, 6.0 badges, and a few other minor cosmetic variations than the 04 models.

i dont think they have true dual exhaust..i could be wrong but i see ls1 04 goats with single pipe exits out back.

the 05+ LS2 guys are dual exits with the hood scoops and 6.0 badge on the back bumper.

i was impressed on how my car held its own for those first 15-45ish mph, then by 50-60 he pulled ahead. i know his shifting hurt him, but i had a passenger which does slow my car down a good bit. L98 low end with a stall rips good on the street

yep, i think that will be a good race. i had a oppurtunity to run a ls1 goat before. he didnt seem interested but went for it..caugth me off guard...he got a carlength headstart before i went for it. and by then it didnt matter. he was pullin way. i expect a fairly close race with one with my car for alittle while. alot better than this ls2 race

LS2s have dual exhaust, 6.0 badges and hood scoops. LS1s have none of those.

Nice race man! Hopefully next time you can get him from a dig.

Atleast he sounded cool. I have soo many people here fly by at like 80 and not slow down, expecting me to chase them.

The '04's had true dual exhaust that never touched either side but only 2.25" and exited the driver's side. The '05 and '06 have 2.5" dual exhaust but share a common resonator. Outside differences would be rear bumper with exhaust on each side of car, hood, badges, with 18" wheels available. The '06 has different tail lights and grills.

How do you have a true dual exhaust with only one exit?

There are two tail pipes that exit on the same side of the car.

The new GTO's look like..........well, like grocery getters. They don't look like a muscle car or a sports car, I don't like them. The new ones 08 are supposed to be much better, we'll see. Even with the ram air hoods they look ridiculous. They're also heavy, real heavy and I'm talking weight here, 3900 lbs. There is no way a stock GTO beat a C5 Vette if the Vette driver was trying, no way.

Anyway good story, good race. If you raced from a standing start should kill him off the line, GTO's have that crappy IRS that has more wheel hop than go.

4th gear by 70 for him??? Sounds like he had no clue what he was doing behind the wheel. Feels good running with a fast car though, that I know all about!

well as a owner of both a third gen and a GTO, your not gonna touch the GTO with bolt-ons on a L98. the gto weighs 3775 dry. with the 6.0 and the rear gear, it moves. the wheel hop that everyone bitches about was severly reduced in the '05 and '06 models, and if you know how to launch it you won't have a problem. with the moddified suspension from Pedders and some nice rubber it hooks well.

as for the styling aspect you either like it or hate it. if you don't want one, don't buy one. good run though.

ur right.... i need to edit the story..after talkin to a few on ls1tech and other fbody sites... 4th gear goes to like 105. lol he wasnt in 4th...

what happened, or what i believe, was that he started in second, shifted to first and started pullin hard on me. i mistook that shift as the 1-2. he must have ran thru 2nd and went to third gear and thats when i let off at around 70 i think it was.

i dont stand a chance with a Ls2 goat. i can hang for alittle bit, but thats about it. they are quick cars

I see! There's an '04 I see quite often that has just one big single tip. I just figured the dual tips on one side came off a single pipe. I never got under to look though.

And see here is where I scratch my head and wonder wtf GM is thinking, building a pretty, symetrical true dual all the way from the headers to the rear axle, and then NOT doing dual exhaust out the rear. The difference the exhaust and hood, not to mention the LS2, made to the 05-06 GTOs is huge!

Sounded like a fun run, playing with a quick car and not doing badly is always a blast. I tore up a newer Monte SS (3.8 S/C version, not the newest v8 version) Tuesday night in the SVT Contour, I needed one more good kill before I took it off the road. Nothing worse than having your pride wounded by a 4dr 2.5 liter N/A sedan when you've got a 3.8liter supercharged motor under the hood, or nothing better when your the one wounding the pride. And allowing me to do it not once, not twice, but THREE times, priceless.

Low/Mid 13's - I've seen 13.4 on a stock ride.

Best so far is 12.8 or 12.9, have to check. Best '04 was 13.1. Those are bone stock bests. Track prep and weather played a big part in those times, along with some good driving.

I ran my 13.2 when another guy ran his 13.1 on the same day. Just different tracks. That was the last try being completely stock for me. Just couldn't stand looking at mods sitting on the floor instead of being in the car

yeah ls2's are quick cars. its a good race between them and ls1 fbodies.. they both trap about the same and have similar power to weight. i want to get a gto down in the 3400lb range and 402 stroker
