Just kinda curious

So my car is a work in the process but a buddy of mine already wants to race when its done. Would love some feedback/suggestions(lets avoid the "you need a 305/350/etc" ). The list below are planned mods.
'92 bird. 3.1L. 10-bolt, 3.42 posi. Kuhmo Tires. 700r4 w/ shift kit. decently low miles.
--------------------------
ported intake/heads.
aftermarket cam.
Headers.
Custom CAI.
Good flowing exaust.

vs.

Bone stock(other than crappy body kit) '96 Eclipse turbo, 5-speed. 180+k miles.
approx. 5lbs of boost.
Guy doesnt seem to understand WTF a spooled launch is.
Average run-of-the-mill street tires.

What do we think?

ported intake/heads.
aftermarket cam.
Good flowing exaust

all three are quite vague, many different ways they could go, it would be hard to give a real idea without some specs

Re: Just kinda curious

I havent quite firgured out what I wanna do with heads & intake just yet. As for the cam, probably go with the .454 lift cam that I found. For exhaust, Im thinking no converter, 3" pipe into a Cherry Bomb Vortex, dumping into dual 2 1/4 or 2 1/2" pipes. I also considered some forged pistons.

Re: Just kinda curious

What do we think about adding a Double-Roller timing chain & 1.6:1 comp cams rockers? Just trying to get this all settled and figured out before I start to buy parts and put the motor back together. Definately up for suggestions. I'd like to make decently respectable hp for a v6. At a later date I will add a turbo but thats some time away.

The eclipse is it a gst or gsx? or just a gs turboed? 5spd? this might be a good race the boosted eclispes are fast but i think if you make about 250-300 rwhp you have the race unless its a gsx then he'll get you out of the line (if he can drive) dose he suffer from boost leaks? or crep?

he has a 3.1

sorry the eclipse should take this one easily. There arn't enough mods done to your 6 too keep up. As much as u want to avoid the typical cubic inches trolling, unless your boosted, there is no replacement for displacement.

Re: Just kinda curious

You don't have the mods necessary to overcome the over 60 hp advantage the eclipse has over you. Plus if it probably weighs a couple hundred pounds less than you.
You either have to have forced induction to do this, or pour a great deal of work into that motor to do this. That means intake, heads, cam, injectors, full exhaust, a complete tune, and even then you may want to consider forced induction or nitrous.

I agree with you. 2g Eclipses come in varying forms. There is an RS, GS, GST, and GSX.

All of the turbo versions run 10 pounds stock. Why would he only push 5 pounds unless its a cheap turbo conversion?

Re: Just kinda curious

The setup Im looking to do currently, my uncle did on his 3.1 and made something like 203 to the wheels. I've considered many things except nitrous. That will never go on my car. I'd rather live by all throttle, no bottle and get whooped than to spray. I would swap out for a 350 but I honestly just cant afford to build a decent small block right now. I see no sense in building a stock one.

His car is a gst. The only thing I know hes done to the car is switch to an external wastegate when he replaced his turbo w/ another factory one. I dont know why he runs 5lbs. personally i'd have to build that motor up and run 15+. There is nothing wrong with the car other than its just a little tired. Hes not the greatest driver but hes not terrible. He would be much quicker if he could be spooled on a launch.

Re: Just kinda curious

It's front wheel drive and stock DSM blocks are good for a good amount of boost. The turbo is his limit on boost right now. He can safely and efficiently run that 15 right now. 17 psi is where is turbo is going to just blow hot air.

Either way he would still have you.

Re: Just kinda curious

He can't spool on the line because he has a 5-sp manual. He needs to build rpm's and you need an auto to do this.

Re: Just kinda curious

or if it was from a roll he could brake boost. The 7 bolt DSM motors really suck compared to the 6 bolt (found in 90-92) the 7s arent as reliable but still can handle alot of boost stock their also known to get crank walk and all that good stuff. i really cant belive at that many miles its still running

Re: Just kinda curious

I was told today that a factory supercharger from a 3800 would fit my motor w/o any real problems. true or false?

yeah it runs. its a lil tired but it will still get up and go when it wants to.

Re: Just kinda curious

correct me if i am wrong but 90* v6 parts don't interchange with 60* v6 parts

the 3.1 i know for a fact is a 60* v6 and i am almost sure the l67 i have in my buick is a 90* v6

I personally have no idea. I was just told that it would and was just trying to check some facts.
