hello evryone.. I'm in finishing a chevelle ( i know this page is not about chevelles.. but you have great knowledge about chevy v8's) and the car weighs approximately 3,300 pounds, has a 330hp, 370tq at the flywheel, stock 700r4 trans, street tires and a 3.73 locked rear-end. So that's my car, now the dilemma. Can I win a 05 mustang gt with a manual transmission? The mustang is totally stock, and the race will be held in a proper 1/4 mile dragstrip.
This guy keeps telling me that his newer mustang cannot be compared to old iron and rust (by the way, my chevelle is just getting out of a frame-off resto). He says that those cars have much torque but cannot hook up, and that his mustang would smoke me any day. In conclusion, all the sh*t these guys talk all day. Do you think i could win? also, can I be in the 13's?
Any response greatly appreciated.

First off, are you sure you really weigh 3,300 lbs? If it does great, but if it weighs alot more like I think it does its gonna be a close race seeing as youll have wheel horsepower in the high 200s which is not far off from an 05' Mustang GT I think.

Re: 71 chevelle 350 vs. 05 mustang gt
i think i'm putting my car on the heavy side here... in wikipedia ( i know it is not a good reference site) the 1970 chevelle ss454 weighs 3,260 pounds, and that is with a big block. My chevelle has a small block 350 and plastic inner fenderwells. So i know it weighs less that that. Thank you for your reply
I hope to win this mustang guy

Re: 71 chevelle 350 vs. 05 mustang gt
are you good at launching ur old car? is he a good driver..... i'd say you will win but, by how much depends on drivers... still it wont be far off..... i figure you will catch him at the 60-90mph range just an opinion though.... the new mustangs launch well with good 0-60s because very short gear caps they are still well underpowerdered compares to you. + most stick shift car drivers simply cant drive lol....... i know i cant and i have at best a 14 second stickshift car. launching 1 just isnt the easiest thing with crappy rear gears.

Re: 71 chevelle 350 vs. 05 mustang gt
The GT is a 300 hp @ 5,750 rpm/320 lb.-ft. @ 4,500 rpm. 3,450-lb. car. Thats stock form w/a 5 speed. Its comp. in weight to your listing of: car weighs approximately 3,300 pounds, has a 330hp, 370tq at the flywheel, stock 700r4 trans, street tires and a 3.73 locked rear-end. Do you know if the mustang is stick or auto?

I've always read that an auto robs a car of 17%(ish) of its hp/tq #'s to the rear wheels. Your car @ 330 fwhp = roughly 275rwhp. Equally the 370fwtq = 306rwtq . That torque is going to Pull you off the line if you can get it planted and get some traction.

His car can be safely assumed to be at the most 30fwhp/50fwtq behind you from the jump. Slightly less if its a standard. Now depending on who's got the stickiest tires/best reaction time. (better driver usually wins in a close race but thats a given I always thought) If you have any practice running your Nova down the 1320 I'd give you the win on this one.

just out of sheer curiosity where do you get your hp/tq numbers? Dyno, or desk top dyno software?

Re: 71 chevelle 350 vs. 05 mustang gt
Our 06 GT put down 275/300 to the tires. On one of it's only track passes it went 13.7 @ 101. Had we spent some time with it, probably 13.5s. Also that was bone stock, with about 5000 miles on it.

If your in the 13s it should be a good race, in the 14s and lets hope the Mustang owner cant drive very well.

25thmustang's results are in line. I'm assuming sea level.

Here at 3,000 feet, stock S197 GTs run 14.6ish, both 5-speeds and autos. FYI, stock LS1 F-bodies run the 14.6s also.

Depends on the driver alot, as stated above. I've raced a couple at the track and wasn't impressed. Honestly I know the car driven properly would run alot better times than it did.

This holds true for any stick shift car really...

Go to the strip before you race him and see what your car runs. As long as your close to a 14 flat it should be close.

Re: 71 chevelle 350 vs. 05 mustang gt
Are you sure your car is that light? My '72 Lemans, (comparable to a chevelle), weighed just over 3,700, and that was with me and a few gallons of gas. The interior of the car was gutted, and nature had done some weight reduction to, (rust). I'd say that with you in the car, it should be at least 3,500.
Also, remember that an A-body isn't an extremely aerodynamic vehicle.

I have an '07 Mustang GT Convertible Munual. It has around 260 hp at the rear wheels (Yes it's stock). I would need to know a little more about you Chevelle but I think you could kick my 'Stang's ***. But I could be wrong.
