83 SC VS. 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo
ok.. First off.. both of these cars are mine, I was wondering what everyones opinions on these would be in a race?
the Cobalt is my DD.. and it deffinatly isnt something to laugh it, it's a fast little car, that turbo makes a lot more power than the previous supercharger.
I've yet to really drive my camaro, but in the spring it should be road ready. we have a 350 with L05 heads, they have been worked on a little, but nothing too crazy.. cuz they aint worth it. its got pretty much as big of a cam as it can handle with those heads, a summit aluminum intake, holley 650 carb, hooker headers.. with MSD distributor... my buddy was saying it should be good for around 300hp.. since hes the one who built it.. I can't give exact specs, because I don't really know.
the camaro also has a 700r4 and 3.08:1 open gears.. soon to be 3.73:1 posi gears.
The cobalt is the SS with the turbo, good for 260hp.. its bare bone stock.. with the 5spd manual trans and limited slip differential..
I don't really know what to expect, but as soon as we know the camaro is good to go, we are taking them to the strip and lining them up and seeing what kind of numbers they lay down.. what do you all think?

if you have the 3.73 posi you should win becuase you will have more torque and dont have turbo lag.
make sure you got good tires.

Re: 83 SC VS. 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo
That 350 is not going to make 300hp with Swirlports.... as far as i know swirlports are so bad its hard to make any power with them. Anyways maybe lets say 300 Gross hp which turns out to be about 240-250 net hp which is now believeable. either way i dount its making 300hp bottom line. But then again i'm not 100% sure, some ppl know what they are doing when it comes to swirlports and see the hidden potential. Get the thing dynoed. or run it at the track and weigh it, that'll give you a good idea.
The way the Camaro sits it will probably not beat the Cobalt. Cobalt is making better power and weighs less and its a 5 spd with better gears than the camaro. Put the 3.73's rip off the terrible swirlports put on a standard set of heads from the early 70's to late 80's AT LEAST, and your chances will be a lot better.

I know the swirlport heads aren't great, but my friend is a pretty good mechanic, and he has did a lot of research and work on this engine, hes pretty confident it will be around 300hp, I can't garauntee anything tho..
assuming the camaro is around 300hp.. what do you guys think? i think it will be a good race..
I mean the camaro was pretty peppy with the old stock l98 in it, and that was with the q-jet that needed rebuilt.. that was until i blew that engine..

Re: 83 SC VS. 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo
you may have your hands full with the new turbocharged Cobalts
a friend of mine is thinking about purchasing a turbo SS, so i did some research on their forums. seems most run low 14s/high 13s. some of the better drivers have gotten as fast as 13.5x at 104mph. regardless of ET, almost all of them have trap speeds of 100+mph. pretty good numbers from a stock, boosted, FWD 4cyl

Re: 83 SC VS. 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo
like i said earlier, both cars are mine.. so regardless, I'm gonna win either way, I will be driving the camaro, because I haven't really driven it yet, and my buddy is going to be driving the cobalt, hes a decent driver, but doesnt have nearly as much experience driving my car as i do. and anyone who has driven a newer cobalt can tell you how funky the clutch is on it, everyone who has driven it has told me they hated it.. its pretty touchy
I guess I'll just have to get it all on video when we go, and post it up afterwards. most likely I will not have the posi on the camaro by then.

My guess is the Cobalt. Too many unknown and mismatched parts in the Camaro, and the Cobalt should be a high 13s low 14s car, being stock and unmodded, thats more or less a garantee.
Good luck, my moneys on "you" wining

Re: 83 SC VS. 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo
Tubro-lag? Try launch control and no lift shifting. The 350 my still out-torque the wrong wheel drive Cobalt off the line through 30mph, but then the Cobalt is gonna pull all that back, and go speeding by.
I would wager the cars have near-equivelent horsepower, but the Cobalt is lugging around nearly 1000lbs less weight. Not gonna be a surprise when this race is run.
Now, heads/converter/gears would change everything for the Camaro.
Re: 83 SC VS. 2008 Cobalt SS Turbo
I'm also going to have to bet on the Cobalt. Hell, wait till you start modding THAT car. 3" cat back and hand held tuner is enough to drive those into the low 13's on stock tires..
