Hey man, I was in your shoes about 6 monts ago except my limit was 4 grand. You say you want a bad *** looking car, based on jsut that don't get a Grand National, a nice Camaro will get much more attention.
Now you said you wanted a 92 Maro. In 92 they had the RS and a Z-28 (No IROC). The RS is a 5.0 TBI rated at 170HP nad 255TQ i think. If you want speed get a Z-28. Get a 5.7L TPI auto (no stick available). That makes 245HP and 340TQ I believe. That Z-28 will haul *** in even stock shape.
A low mileage, great condition stock 5.7L Z-28 will cost you around 8K maybe 9. That leaves you 5 or 6K to mod it, there is sooo much you can do to it with that money that an entire diff. post needed for that. To get you started get a complete tuneup and replace all the filters becasue without that all your mods will be wasted.
For 14K you can have an amsolutely amazing thirdgen. I have spend around 4K on my 86 Trans Am so far and its beginning to look very nice (minus a paintjob).
Hope that helps, be sure to post pics of your ride when you get it, go to the classifieds here and you might fins what youre looking for.
BTW A person name CarNDrvr is selling his 92 RS (I think) with a 355 putting out 500HP, you mihgt find him and think about buying his car. Maybe he'll psot a response to your post.

Woo Hoo! With $14,000 dollars you can build an awesom third gen or buy an awesome Grand National. It all depends on what you want. The Grand National is not as common as a Camaro, but I wouldn't think that it would be a good first car. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that because it is fast. You could buy an awesome third gen for under 7 Gs. That would leave you 7 to do just about anything you want. If you are looking for a fast car, you definately want to start with a car that has a 350. You could probably build a hot 406 smallblock up and then go forced induction. I think it's great that you have been saving for 5 years to get what you want. After all that saving don't get foolish with a fast car, just treat it right and don't kill yourself.

If you got 14K to spend, you can get an LS1 car at a dealers auction. Assuming you know one.
But if you want a 3rdGen, look for the best appearace package. You should be able to get a minty specimen for under 3 grand, if you don't care about the engine(V6,V8,TPI,TBI)and you shouln't.
With 11-12 grand left over you can buy a crate motor, tranny and a rear-end to handle it.
Depending on the motor you choose, you should still have a few grand left over.
You can always get a really nice 350 or 305TPI 3rdGen and throw a supercharger on it.
With that kinda budget, you have many choices, me lad. Do a lot of research and good luck.

Flowmaster 3" Cat-back exhaust,TB coolant bypass, Centerforce dual friction clutch.
1999 Lexus GS 400 everyday car(It's a V8 so its not Rice)
1987 Voyager Minivan. Cost me $300=runs like new.No repairs for over 2 years(fingers crossed)

why doesnt someone refer him to carndrvr. 350 with 500 horsepower and a 6 speed. i forgot what year, but it is tight. he'd take 14,000 for it. hell its got nitrous. if you are interested, he just made a post on i think the appearance form. later
I am in your position right now but I only have 4 grand. I would think a Grand National would get a good bit more attention that a third gen Camaro, being as they are a lot more rare. There were no IROC Camaros made in 1992. They quit making IROC's in 1990. The fastest Camaro in 92 is a Z28, and they can be had with a 350 TPI auto(245 HP) A 305 TPI auto(230 HP I think), or a 305 TPI 5 speed(230 HP). A Grand National is probably gonna be more expensive than a 92 Camaro. Grand Nationals are faster though, and can be made even faster for pretty cheap. I dont know if a Grand National would make a very good first car though.. Especially if you have a lot of snow during winters. Road salt can kill Grand Nationals(and all G-Bodies, for that matter) For 14 grand I would probably look for a used LT1 or LS1 fourth gen Camaro. They will be more reliable in all likelyhood, and faster than the 92 Camaro, and about the same or a little faster than the Grand National. 1993-1997 were LT1 models, and had somewhere between 290-305 HP, not sure there. 1998 and up are LS1 engines, and they have 305-325 HP, depending on whether you get the Z28 or Z28 SS.

Personally, I'd get the IROC for 2 reasons: It has a 350 and I like the styling of the IROC's the best (personal choice). If you get a 305 powered car, you will regret it. Not that you can't make a 305 fast, there are plenty of fast 305's on this board, but it's just plain easier w/ a 350. Also, the IROC has fresh paint so you can spend your money modding the engine (trust me, the modding bug WILL get you) and you won't have to worry about the exterior looking worn out for years.

I love camaros, but with $14000 to spend, i'd buy a Monte Carlo SS, drop in a ZZ4, a T-56, and bolt on a 4" cowl hood. That would be too sweet!!

if i had 14,000 i would get a 69 camaro ss with a 396 and 4 on the floor. or a 67 malibu ss. somethin cool. another cool idea would be buy a 3rd gen camaro with a nice body and a shot motor (i went this route, just not 14,000 worth), i got mine for $400, and make it all high performance. ****, if you can pick an iroc up for less than $1000, drop a ramjet 350 in, T-56, some nice 4.11 gears, get some leather 4th gen seats, thatd be a nice ride and you still would be way under your 14,000 mark.

if you want the speed of a grand national and the look of a third gen, get yourself a 89 turbo trans am, if you can find one
, but since it sounds like you want a camaro, if youve got the cash, go for a iroc, 89 or 90. you could find a nice one and still have $$ left for mods

So you want a third gen or grand national, and you wan't a fast one. If your talking about stock, the grand national will destroy any stock 350 made in the third gen. The grand national might not be so flashy, but all it needs is black outs to look mean as hell. With that kind of money your talking about, you can get a pretty nice grand national or 89' TTA. But then again your only what, 16. I would recomend getting a beater camaro with a 305 just to get used of a somewhat quick car, before you go and hurt yourself in a car thats to fast for your driving ability. I'm not trying to bash you man,and no I don;t know how much driving experience you have, but my first car was a 80 t/a, and I pretty much destroyed it. At the time the car was just too much for me too handle as a new driver, and I couldn't seem to get the gas pedal off the floor. Be carefull.

from experience, dont go out racing ricers your first day with the car. im 16, ive had my bird for like 3-4 months, the firstday i had it, i was out driving after school (bald tires) it started to poor, i couldnt even see, so i turned into a little shopping center and spun out hit the median and the bird lay there on top of a tree. just get used to you kick *** car before u go crazy with it

Forget the Carbed cars, forget the 5 speed cars, forget the 305 cars. Why? The carb is a dinosaur stay with F.I. only, the 5 speed will break if you get traction with more than 330 HP to the ground and the 305 has a very small bore which makes it very hard to get it to breathe well NA(plus a 100 more reasons why I don't like 305s) #1 Be patient. If you want a 92 wait for one. I would not get an F-body older than an 1988. All RSs are slow and expensive to make fast. For 88-90 go with an IROC-Z & 91-92 Z-28 350TPI only. If you want a stick shift get a T56 6 Speed from a 4th Gen. and have a good shop put it in for you. Have the engine rebuilt with some good forged pistons. Get a 9 to 12 PSI Intercooled Pro Charger. ...and there you have it -Stick shift 6 speed behind a 500 HP motor. Have fun and drive safely.

You can get a lot of used 1993-1996 Camaro/Firebird models real cheap. Trouble is, the people who own them run them into the ground, mileage wise. The 93-97 LT1 350 had 275hp, then got bumped up to 285 in 96??. The WS6 Ram Air gives you 305hp.

Or what about this? Buy a Volvo 240 estate with a diesel badge on the back and put a blown 502 in there. Everyone will think that you are such a sensible young man except for those that know you.
If you go for a thirdgen go for an IROC, the handling is excellent. And with the money left over you can get some serrious mods like a blower. Remember, every guy likes to be blown, at least I do.
