88 GTA vs 96 corvette, be gentle, heh.

Okay, so I have a nice stock 88 GTA auto, 350, no g92. What mods would i need (nothing crazy like a charger or n02) to beat a 96 vette with 120,000 miles on it. I believe his stock hp is 300. mine is 225. New flowmaster exhaust, K&N filter and JET chip/thermo on the way already. what else can i do to compete??? thanks~!

can you explain miniram and newer heads to me? Btw, mine has a pampered 79,000 miles on it, compared to his 120,000.

best place/type to get gears and a cam?

thanks all -

You could always strap a JATO rocket to your roof

Seriously...save up some $$ and go buy a LS1 car. You WILL NOT beat that Vette without spending big dollars in mods. I am talking over $3500 here.

If you really want to surprise him, put on 150HP shot of spray and hide it real well. You can then tell the guy he got his @ss handed to him by a STOCK GTA.

I had a 88 Vette with a 350 TPI, and I had been spraying N2O since it had 150,000 miles on it up until it had 250,000 on it. I beat it like a rental car trying to blow that motor up so I could upgrade it. It never even let out a fart. It ran flawlessly until I sold it 2 years ago, and is still running strong today with 275,000 on the STOCK engine.

So if you want to go Vette hunting on a budget, spraying it is the best bang for the buck. Beware though, it takes a good N2O tuner to keep the engine holding together. What I did was run the nitrous system rich. Meaning I put more fuel into it than called for. It kept things held together well.

If you want tips on how to hide a NOS kit on a TPI car, email me and I will be glad to give you some pointers.

Stock 88 GTAs ran 14.9-15.5s in the 1/4 -Stock 96 Vettes ran 13.7-14.3s in the 1/4. You are going to need another 100 -125Hp if you want to beat him. A good cam, better intake parts(even TPI), good set of heads, headers and better ignition parts should get you there. ...02

Um,stock auto LT1 vettes are no challenge for me on the street(have smoked 2 of em')I have less than$1200 in my car+700 on a rebuilt trans, and did it before trans, stock cam, heads, exhaust and intake manifold.A strong running 96 LT1 vette with 2.59 gears will run high 13's in the 1/4,probably worse with that many miles.A strong 88 GTA with 2.77's should do atleast high 14's,so there is a defecit of about 1 sec which can be made up easy.In the Jan 99 issue of GMHTP they took an 88 GTA which ran a 14.7 stone stock(don't know what axle)to 14.1 with just $300 spent on used slicks,K&N,SLP flowbooster,AFPR,and bumped timing and ported plenum. First though, make sure everything is tuned, new plugs, wires, coil, cap, rotor, module, fuel filter,02 sensor,(AC delco parts)synthetic oil(Mobil 1)Check timing with 1 wire connector disconnected and set at 8-10 deg.(6 with chip)Check for any trouble codes or worn sensors.Clean fuel injectors with a 3M fuel injector cleaning kit or equivelant.Check TPS voltage(.54-.56) "Punch out" or replace cat converter with a high flow one.Bypass throttle body coolant, remove screens from Mass air sensor, install an adjustable fuel pressure regulator-set at 47-50PSI,and port plenum walls with a diegrinder. Now you are ready for the following mods.
throttle body airfoil, underdrive crank pulley with belt, cold air intake.I like SLP's stuff, but there are some other good AM company's.Your next set of mods will have that vette looking at your taillights, see if you can find a 3.42 9 bolt rear out of a G92 5spd car, adjust speedo, drop a 22-2400 torqueconverter and shift kit(SLP) in your trans, and slap on some drag radials. With your exhaust and chip that should be good enough for atleast high 13's,but personally although JET is a decent chip I would put that money towards some runners and headers, and then either DIY,or get get a custom one made from Ed wright at www.fastchip.com You can run mid-low 13's NA,without digging into the moter,I did it, and so can you,but a good set of heads, cam, and roller rockers will surely help.Hope this has helped, and have fun modding your car.

I've got just about every mod you've just mentioned. I havn't been to the track or in any races since, but I estimate I am going 13.50-13.80 somewhere. I know before the ported intake and dual cat y-pipe with cats bypassed, and 160* stat it went 13.98 on a g-tech.

You are right. He can do it for much less. I musta been on something j/k
