'82 5.0 litre 3-speed 2.73:1 rear - How fast ?
What are the performance figures for an '82 Crossfire 5.0 litre TransAm , 3-speed auto with 2.73:1 rear end ? 0-60, 0-100 mph , can they pull out and overtake other cars travelling at, say, 60mph quickly (and safely) .The reason I'm asking is because I hear that this set-up is pretty leisurely , and would like to know just how it performs - before I go and get the rear end changed to 2.73:1 - any advice would be appreciated !!!

According to the article just posted this weekend at https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/a...unerandt.shtml :
"The Z-28’s available fuel injected engine shifts the balance somewhat. It is markedly more powerful (an additional 20bhp) and responsive than the carbureted one, so much so that even with its automatic transmission it gives better acceleration times, 0-60 in 9.0 sec, the quarter mile in 16.8 sec and 81.0mph, and 0-100 in 28.0."
They didn't say what gears it had, but the tech data on these boards indicates 2.93s or 3.23s were standard and optional, respectively, with that engine. Since they did say it had disk rears, perhaps it had the 3.23s.
Perhaps you actually have 2.93s? And, I assume you meant getting new 3.73 gears. With the 3-speed auto, get used to a high reving engine on the open road with 3.73s, but the off-the-line and out-of-the-corners performance will be markedly improved.

i am the proud owner of a 83 recaro trans am
and im gonna put it to u straight. my stock t/a has 3.23 and a 700 r4 and has a little more power than ur car. the car u got would run close to a 19 second quarter mile time in utah so id say 18.3 or so in cali. i know u think im probably full of it but im totally serious a stock 82 cfi wont beat much of anything. especially with a 3 speed and 2.73's, i bet ull run a 0 to 60 time of 9 seconds or more. but i got a ton of ideas on how to beef up these machines to kick a little *** ! so does tom400cid! sorry for the bad news.

Thanks for that guys. Will probably go for 2.93's or 3.23's instead of the 2.73's. At the moment I appear to have 3.73's , as the car overrevs like crazy , the speedo over reads as well (the diff was changed by a previous owner ). Thinking more in terms of quieter cruising , but not so much in that I am left with no power, so the 2.93 / 3.23 seem to be the better choices.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer - any tips on tuning one of these cars would be appreciated !
