I was reading through the new car and driver today and I came across a new saturn SC turbo. I promiss all of these stats are exactly what they put in car and driver. This new saturn has 220 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. In a 5 speed manual it does 0-60 in 5.2. Now here comes the part that I can't believe. It says that this car does the quarter in 13.5 @ 107mph. It will do 0-100 in 11.4. Is it just me or do these number not comply with the 220 horsepower? How many of you guys think you could take this new saturn? How many are like me and think that car and driver makes up a load of CR@P?

seems right to me, those power firgures are about the same as a stock TBI and TPI 305's but figure in a 5 speed and the tiny light saturn body those times seem right on,..the rice is starting to really take over the performance market now, i heard somewhere one of those honda's right off the showroom is running high 13's low 14's there starting to shutout the american cars, and with the F-bodys gone after 2002 people are going to be looking elsewhere for the power, and the new, fast and most importantly CHEAP rice cars are going to be a big hit.

Reading the WRX post makes me wonder... don't those stats sound very similar to the WRX? Hmmm
Yeah, I think those stats sound fine... Hp is not the number you should be comparing to, the weight is what you should look at.

Maybe it's just me but doesn't it seem a long time to go from 100 to 107 in 2 seconds.

i don't know, that car is really light but it doesn't fit in with the 2 seconds from 100-107, u'd think they'd get a better quarter time than that if it goes 0-100 in 11. It still sux tho, a 4cyclinder running 13's, I wish my car was that light.

I don't know about you guys, but something looks screwed up here. The car goes 0-100 in 11.4 but does the quarter in 13.5 at 107. If it actually got to 100 that fast the quarter mile time should be lower, like mark said it takes 2 seconds to gain 7mph but only 11 seconds to get 100 doesn't seem right.

it's ricorama man! Anything is possible with enough stickers and fartpipes! oh yeah did i mention what car and driver said about the new civic si?
quote: "we're on an autobahn in the eastern part of Germany, and we're traveling at an indicated 130 mph. Our Honda Civic Si tracks as if it were on rails"
Did i mention this civic ran a 16.1 @ 87 mph. They better hope the rails don't go uphill.

Theres faster F-Bodies out there so....
When they do come out with a 5th Gen, they should make it REALLY light and put and LS1 (or whatever fast engine is being made then) in there.

Yeah, I think I had a run in with one of these bad boy's. I pulled up to a light with a saturn. A guy was driving with his girlfriend and kept looking at me at the light. I was like WTF
.... it was a damn 4 door saturn!!! The light hit and I got on it pretty good. At about 50 the guy comes outta nowhere and flies by me like I was standing still, and I could hear the turbo loud and clear. I can't even express in words how funny I thought it was. I couldn't stop laughing the entire way to work. After the race, the guy got in the right turn lane, rolled down his window, and flicked me off while I was sitting at the next light for a good 15 seconds before he turned. I thought this was even funnier than him beating me; a c o c k y saturn owner?!?! It was quite possibly the funniest thing I have ever seen in my life.

That Saturn isn't even available from Saturn, by the way...that car is an R&D car that was set up for One Lap of America (I read the articles
)
If violate raced a turbo Saturn, then it was definitely an aftermarket turbo...the fastest Saturn over-the-counter is a 124hp SC2

Sounds like it's about time most of you started gutting your cars.
We need to be sub 3000lbs to be a REAL sports car, to most people our cars are muscle cars when infact they were designed with suspension and handling first! Go figure...get rid of the rear seats (nobody uses them anyways), install lighter parts ALL over. Remove everything you can (legal) and THEN bring the rice.

I think the fastest production saturn is the LS2, you know, the midsizer with a V6. This motor is actually a saab motor and it runs pretty good. In fact, they're damn nice cars, they handle really nicely.
As for the 2 seconds to get to 107 from 100, that is pretty typical, cars really statr to get slow up there. It takes the Ferrari 550 2.9 seconds to go from 100 to 115.

Actaully the Saturns 3.0 54 degree V6 is from GM of Europe. SAAB just borrowed it as
did Saturn.
I think C&D is the best car mag going!
After 100mph most cars really fall off the acerlaeration curve- unless they have tons
of hp. To give you an example the drag at
(wind resistance) at 120mph is FOUR times higer then at 60mph (or something like that)
Lots of air to push through
------------------
5 months and it hasn't broken down- a new record!

By GM europe i hope you mean opel. i was afraid no one would believe my claim about the saturn V6 being an opel. In fact, the whole midsize saturn is an opel omega. The only difference is front and rear fascia.

Like the post above said...the 2.2 seconds to go from 100-107 seems about right. At a certain speed you get to the point where the wind resistance is a larger force to have to overcome than actual vehicle weight is. This is why you can take a 200hp/2000lb car and a 300hp/3000lb car and they may be even up to a certain speed but then the 300hp car will start to pull because the lower hp car just doesn't have the hp to overcome the wind resistance. This is all provided that both cars are approximately equally aerodynamic.

Is this the same C&D that only ran a 13.7 quarter with a '02 Camaro SS on TV today? I don't believe any times out of a yuppie mag. If it came from Car Craft or Hot Rod, that would be different.

What do SS camaros usually run? 13.7 sounds in line with what they can do without powershifting.
Yeah, this is the same C & D that says the 01 SS only runs a 13.7. The thing that makes me mad is all the praise the foreign cars get for making 180-200hp out of a 4 or 6 cyclinder and american V8's are always getting criticized. If they think that VTEC is so great they should take a look at an LS1. The LS1 is the only engine I know of that you can toss a coupla grand at and be in the low 11's. (with a 3000+ lb car). If they can find a rice car that will run 11's with only a coupla grand (without putting on 4 stages of Nitrous) then I'll give them the thumbs up. But, till then I'm V8 all the way.

GM can keep its Saturns, 13's, turbo, or no. GM HIGH TECH PERFORMANCE drag tested a <bone stock> LS1 Z28 and got a 12.96! With a dirty air filter and hot weather! Just my 2 cents.
Member
Yeah, most 6 speed LS1's seem to be running low 13's. I don't know how they can run the same times with a 180 hp saturn as they run with a 330 hp SS. Who cares if it gives up 500 lbs! Just trying to make those little cars look better I guess.
Yeah, the LS1 is an awesome engine, which is why my next car will definately have one. They deserve more credit than they get, but did anyone catch car and driver television this weekend? It was a show devoted pretty much entirely to the camaro. For further proof of C/D's lack of driving skills check out the weak takeoff at the end of the show, he barely screeched the tires.
