Were looking for a car for my friend and I found a 1996 eclipse GST(he likes imports, not rice though). In the pic it has just basic extra's like tint and rims. How fast are these an how fast would it be with an intake and exhaust, just in case it has those mods which I think it does.

It would be about as fast if not faster than a GOOD condition 92 305 TBI. They have 210hp and I dunno what the torque is. They will put you in the seat. And with an intake and exhaust...watch out. If he gets to messing with the turbo you might as well give it up unless you have some serious mods. Although GS-T is slower than a GSX because the GSX would have AWD and dont even try to race one off the line.

definately faster than a TBI car...by about a second in the quarter.

Basic mods (open intake, exhaust, and blow-off valve) along with a cheap or homemade boost controller will put him in the low 14's/high 13's depending on his driving abilities or lack thereof. Good tires will be a major plus on a front-driver with that much power. The main problem with fwd DSM's is that it's just so hard to hook-up well in the lower gears.
The 2nd gen DSM's are slightly less powerful mod for mod compared to a 1st gen, but the potential is certainly still there.

You dont have to worry, most of the time it will be in the shop. Those Mitsubishi's are a POS. Really, my friends GSX has had so much **** go wrong with it. Especially the oil lines, they kept blowing. One after another. And he had to get his tranny rebuilt the other week because they use such ****ty parts.

true some of the motors are not very good in theses cars. BUT they are fast regardless and alot of them can run to 100,000 miles without very many problems at all....
The GSt is fast with a few minor mods. The RS is horrible, but the GS series is good. A good car to make fast.
BTW I think they ran high 14s low 15s stock. so watch it if he mods it.

Yea I heard the engine's weren't that great at dependability, but it can't be any worse than his 89 crx that has an engine that looks likes it's been in the ocean for awhile. And I'm not very worried about the eclipse beating my car.

There's a guy I work with who has an early 90's GST and I raced him in my Lincoln LSC and he beat me by about 2 1/2 cars up to the point of a quarter mile then gained on me alot more. Not saying that my lincoln is some speed demon vehicle but it's not a slow car.I'm guessing his car must have been running a 15.0 or better.

I kept up with my friend's GSX with my mom's Camry. LOL that was soooo funny. I rubbed it in his face.

Everyone knows someone with every make and model of a car that is a POS, including DSM's and 3rd gen Camaros.
The 4G63 turbo engines in DSM's are damned near impossible to kill if you change the oil once in a while. In fact, they are still produced in Japan in the Mitsu Evolution series of cars (with a bigger turbo and a front mount intercooler, to boot). As long as the timing belt is changed every 60k miles and you have an a/f ratio gauge to keep an eye on your engine when you jack up the boost, you should be good.
I bought my DSM with 60k miles...it now has 102k, and it has seen track use by me...nothing has ever broken on my car while I've owned it...NOTHING. The only thing that I may be needing in the next year is a clutch, but 17 lbs of boost has a way of doing that.

Just so you know, stock for stock, the GST is faster than the GSX if you launch it properly. The AWD system takes more hp to run, but later down the line with heavy mods, the AWD will have a major advantage due to traction.

ditto to whoever said that everyone knows someone with a POS for any car....i had a '90 Eclipse GS about a year ago with 180K on it, and i never had a problem out of it...ran smooth, and ran fast...
