gran marquis

Ok this was the stupidest thing I ever saw. I'm sittin at a stop light and one of these is next to me and it look slike it has like exhaust but it could have just been tips since the rest of the system looked stock. But the kid revs at me!! I just got my slp loudmouth installed so I though I would test it out. I about deafened the whole crowd of cars and the guy still raced me off the line!! It wans't even a chance for the poor guy. But really what are people thinking....a gran marquis...my grandpa drives one of those.

What year was the grand marquis ? Cuz the new ones are rated at 220hp and 265 lbs of torque although I am sure your 94 would take him.

A sound clip of the exhaust is at http://townsoft.com/firehawk/loudmouth.asp. That's not my website though, it's a guy I know. The only problem I can saw about it that it kinda sounds like a boat in the beggining, but it's not in a bad way. And the gran margquis was older...maybe 6-7 years.

Mmm...how do I put this without coming off like an *******? Unless it's modified, your friend's car is making 150 hp and has a peg leg rearend with 3.45's in the back. It might be good for a 16 second 1/4 mile run on in good air.

I second that to back up Nic. The "police package" usually only includes beefier suspension peices and heavy duty brakes. Ford doesn't dump 351's into their cop cars Beleive me, if they did I would have bought a copstang.

The 5.0's they put in the crown vic, gran marquis, town car. cougars, tbirds and other cars are weak. They are NOT "5.0L HO"s which are different and only come in the Mustang and Mark VII and I think a few special edition cougars and tbirds. the HO motor puts out 225HP. The non-HO motor ranges from 140HP to 200HP.

He may be pushing 160 hp at the most.

The only difference in the HO and non-HO intake is the label on the little plate on top of the upper manifold.

My Stang originally had a non-HO motor in it that I'd swapped in from an 86 grand marquis (same as the '87) that had been in a fire and I'd picked it up for $25. In stock trim with headers, an offroad x-pipe, and dual exhaust (dynomax) and a K&N it ran 15.30's - 15.40's @ 86-88 mph. This was at 3000 lbs with a 2400 stall converter and 90/10's + 50/50's on drag radials with no front swaybar. You're friends car weighs about 1000 lbs. more and isn't making as much horsepower either.

What really sucks about the non-HO motor are the heads, cam, and throttle body. The stock HO cam is a .440" lift cam while the non-HO cam never even sees .400", I think it's somewhere around .380". Stock HO throttle body is 60mm, non-HO...I think it measured 53mm inside. The injectors are comparitively small as well, rated at 14 lb/hr as compared to the 19 lb/hr injectors used on the HO motors. The non-HO heads...they umm...make an interesting paper weight

One the plus side, the non-HO makes massive (relatively speaking) torque down low. Peak torque is something in the neighborhood of 260 ft. lbs. at an astonishly low 2600 rpm! Afterall, this motor was designed to push 4000-5000 lbs luxury cars around town. This is the reason behind the massive burnouts your friend's car can do. Peak horsepower comes at something like 3800 rpm and the motor falls flat on it's face VERY quickly after that.

Don't sweat us pointing out the facts man, we're not jumping on you...just educating you, k? No harm nor hard feelings intended by any of this.

Alright, sorry to reply so late to this topic, but I am getting so sick and tired of whiney losers bitching about someone have something other tan a camaro or trans am. Why the hell can't we all just be clones right? First off, in 83 a 302 in a full size ford put out 130 hp. 1985 was different. I believe my own 302 puts out about 160 hp and I have very few mods. 4 point plugs, KandN air filter. Later in the 80s or very early 90s the 5.0 put out 190 hp. And that is in the full size car if I remember correctly.
Let's just cut this bullshit. Condemning people for there vehicles. What's next? Their dogs? My daddy can beat up your daddy? This is stupid. Grow up, children.

my father has a police package crown vic. Now I hate fords but man that thing hauls. The dealer ship over ordered for the Houston police dept. and he got it. The cool thing is the dealership replaced the 4.6 and put in a 5.3 in it. Is that like a 327 or something. But we have all the paper work for it. It also has 3.73 in the rear.

IM NOT KIDDING, IT HAS A 5.3

As a former Mayor of my hometown, our small police force had several 351-Windsor equipped police cars. The years I have in mind were 1985, '86, '87, '89, and '91. These were the "square" cars and all Fords. The "Police Package" versions had several important differences, notably larger cooling system, more heavy-duty charging system, low-gear lock out, tranny and steering box coolers and no carpet among other things.

The "round body" '91 and up versions came with the modular engine which gave a great deal of trouble for several subsequent model years. The easiest way to tell the horsepower on these is if it single exhaust, it is 190 horsepower. Dual exhaust bumped it up to 210 horsepower.

Police cars DO feel fast but in truth are lucky to get out of the high 15s to low 16s if tested in the 1/4 mile.

Don't ask me how I know!
