91 GTA vs. new Malibu

Ok, so just now I was coming home from a store run and when I got to the light before the on ramp I pulled up behind a dark red new Malibu with black aftermarket wheels. I had a suspicion of him with my street racer senses lol, and was ready for whatever.
When the light turned green we both made a right onto the 2 lane on ramp pretty quickly and he took the right and I took the left and we both just booted it. I couldn't gain on him at all for the first bit then I finally started to slowly pull, then the top of the on ramp makes a somewhat sharp right turn and when I got to it traffic had me blocked from getting onto the highway, so I had to pop off the throttle and nail the brakes and this made my car angry and it started sliding sideways and I ended up over in the far right lane and once corrected, I just mashed it to pass some traffic before I swerved in onto the highway. The Malibu, who had the far right lane, just kept going and busted in through the traffic onto the highway at the last second in a cloud of dust, but I made my way through real quick and charged up to him a 1/4 mile later. He got blocked in and I made it through a hole and got passed him when it opened up from 2 to 3 lanes.
This continued for another mile with me running away from him until we went seperate ways, but my question is: Why the hell did it take so long for me to get the upper hand on him up the on ramp? All I can figure is it wasn't stock, because I checked and they are 15 second cars at best and mine does 13's easy and it just seemed way to hard to reel him in for what it was. Any performance parts out for those I don't know about that he might have had to help him?

hate to say it but I beat up on an 87 TA when I was driving my wifes 2009 Malibu home from the dealer a few years back. Her cars V6 3.6 makes 252HP and runs the 1/4 in 14.6.

That could have just been some stock 305 junk though that runs 15-16's. I on the other hand have a 91 350 with 240 HP stock, every bolt on I can have, and I run in the 13's easily considering I did a 14.2 before alot of my mods were done.

Re: 91 GTA vs. new Malibu

yeah 305 TPI run anywhere from mid 14s to mid 15s. When I had a full bolton 350 TPI I ran low 13's and it was in GM High Tech Mag in 06. Still it sucks that a V6 Malibu gives a L98 a run.

Re: 91 GTA vs. new Malibu

I still insist the thing wasn't stock, but I also found out I had a few issues at the time. My fuel pressure was low, I had a big vacuum leak, and it was retarding timing due to spark knock. Even before I fixed those issues though, I logged a 0-60 in 5.7 seconds with a foot to the floor and tires spinning for 300 ft. run, so I just don't see how he held me off that well without mods.

Re: 91 GTA vs. new Malibu

Yeah today average cars run what our fast f bodys ran years ago but I mean I don't look at it that way, if I did it would only depress me and depression is something you NEVER wanna go thru, so the way I see it is not that new cars are fast like our old ones but that its taken them 20+ years to catch up, If my L98 can still run and sometimes beat todays Hondas, Nissans & mustang v6 with 300+ hp I see that as a loss for them. My 20 year old TPI can still muscle its way thru a new crowd of Direct Injection / vtech / 3 valves per cylinder cars. and my L98 hit 5.5 0-60 & a nest of 14.4 in the 1/4 mile.

Not mine...

I patterned my GTA after the Grand National, went with a turbo and never looked back. Was playing with a new twin turbo BMW last month and he was getting frustrated because he couldn't catch me. Never bring a knife to a gun fight, as a bolt on L98 isn't considered fast by today's standards. Rather, no 12 or 13 second car is considered fast anymore, period.

Re: 91 GTA vs. new Malibu

I'll get down there soon enough. I am probably running about a 13.5-13.6 or better once the rear diff is installed I have sitting here and I get this fueling issue straightened out. Also have a cam and 113 heads with 2.02/1.60 valves and some porting work done, to be installed sooner or later. Once that and a few other things are done like SFC's and a tranny beef up + stall converter, I'll be supercharge/intercooling it. I figure I'll be tapping the 11's with no prob, which will be plenty to make me happy.
