1990 T/A vs. 1989 Mustang GT

just another one of those "what if" cases,
My brother has a 1989 Mustang GT with the "5.0" 4.9L engine.
I have my 1990 T/A with a L98.
both our cars (as far as we know) are stock.
who'd win in a 1/4 mile race?
what about in a 1/8 mile?

this would be done with street tires btw.

If your both stock you should win, it will be closer if he has a 5 speed. once you both start modding the Mustang well respond better mod for mod.

Yep. With some nice tires you could run 14.5. If he has the GT, he's in the low 15s (because the GT had extra body and ground fx, but no extra power). he'd have to have an LX 5.0 or some mods before he dips into the 14s. But if he's a better driver he could still win.

It looks like you have an aftermarket cold air intake, You might actually be quicker than that.

Its the stock air intake in the photo of your motor, he must've confused it with an aftermarket tube. All SD TPI Firebirds had that style of induction tubing

if you foot break it just above idle your tires should hook. maybe just a little burn out to clean up the tires right before the GO!. when my gta was stock mid way through second gear my car would pull away slowly from the fox bodys.

You should take it, but to be honest, Auto GT's run around 15.3's on a good day meaning the stock 5 speeds run high 14s...

Make sure you post up the results after you race him. These are my favorite types of races!

My auto fox was as stated a low 15 second car with 2.73 gears. A stock GT or LX 5-speed should be a 14 second car. Age and abuse will probably be a big factor on performance. Assuming both are in good shape and stock, probably both 14 second cars, and probably a fairly good race!

Re: 1990 T/A vs. 1989 Mustang GT

As to age and abuse, I know for a fact my Car was well taken car of as far as mechanicals go (though the shops took some short cuts on body work ) as far as my brothers car goes, not really sure as to the amount of abuse, after seeing some of the other Fox bodies around here I doubt his fared worse than mine.

As to race results I'll be sure to post'em, we still both have some work to get our cars ready, and work on mine has sorta stalled, so no knowing on when this would happen. but I hope it will, heh he won't stop blabbing about how his car will be faster, can't wait for him to (hopefully) eat his words.
