5 speed or 6? Only 6 cylinders came with 5 speeds on the 4th gens. I can tell you stock with a good driver his car can go anywhere from a low 14 to mid 14. Bolt on 6 speeds can easily see low 13s with a good driver.

GTA with basically just exhaust (''chip'' and Shift kit in reality are no mentionable gain mods) vs a LT1 with exhaust.

You are not going to like the begining of this race...
You having an automatic L98 gives up plenty.. 5/6spd L98 with all bolt one is a much better match. At this point I will say from many years of experience you will need a 75-100 shot of nitrous to outrun that Lt1 if the driver has skills and mild mods...

Re: 89 gta vs lt1 trans am
My buddies bone stock 96 Trans Am M6 went 13.7 @ 102, that was with him only owning the car for 2 weeks, and his first stick car. He put me in the car because I was a much better driver, but I missed 3rd (used to my shortshifter) and still ran 14.1... I don't think you have a chance.

Car to Car is in favor of the LT1. Same weight, 40-50hp advantage to the LT1 depending on year.

Re: 89 gta vs lt1 trans am
Truthfully from a stop it would depend on the driver. Launching those 6 speed cars takes more practice than most people think.
If he is descent at launching and descent at shifting I'd say he would beat you. Also the LT1 cars seem very hit or miss with power. I've driven one that was gutless even with descent compression across all 8 cylinder, new ignition, fuel pump and bolt ons; I've driven stock ones that would have killed the said car.

Re: 89 gta vs lt1 trans am
If you can get this race done at the strip..get some good tire..3.73 or 4.10 gear, shed some weight and launch the car hard you could take him right out of the gate but it will be damn close.Otherwise..leave the lt1 alone or he will take a bite out of your hide..especially from a roll which is not l98/auto territory. Your best chance is to use all that tpi torque and plant it down before his mid range gets in its power curve.

Re: 89 gta vs lt1 trans am
Lol you are right..having a better tire and better gear ratio wont benefit him at all.Leave the car fully stock and go race an lt1 car that has exhaust. He should be favored to win, especially at the track in the 1/4.

Re: 89 gta vs lt1 trans am
I will also say that adding 3.73s or 4.10s to an auto TPI car will not do the trick. TPI cars make bottom end power and they will suffer bigtime on the top end if it was a 5/6 speed I would be inclined to believe an overall gain..

For a fair comparison... Again using my friends 96 Trans Am, His first run down the 1/4 ever with a stick car on street tires, he still ran a 14.5.

Re: 89 gta vs lt1 trans am
a 3.73 with decent stall, good tire/slick of some sort and weight reduction is not a bad setup on an auto tpi car dialed in correctly.many members on here have done it and ran mid-high 13s without extensive mods, which can take out a stock lt1 fbody.even then its still a drivers race still..and time/money is needed for the 3rdgen to pull it off.it wont mph like the lt1 would.
his only other shot is spray the way the car sits right now.

Ive hung with auto LT1 cars in my auto LB9 car stock off the line. Then theyslowly pull away from the extra HP. Then when I put 373's in the rear, 2400 stall, Cam and a procharger in. And they saw taillights.

Well no **** buddy of course they are, add those same mods to the lt1 and he will put bus lengths on you.
My advice is to just avoid this anus opening ceremony for yourself. Enjoy your ride for what it is and stop trying to race anyone. You want to be fast? Then make sure you have a good budget and not one of a 18 year old working at mcdonalds and head over to the tpi forums and research.
