Yes they help but really need exhaust headers to make full use of everything. Base timing to 8 deg and 91-93 oct

Dizzy wrench is all you need but may need to remove coil and bracket to get to the hold down bolt

Re: what would it take to run 13's
headers are generally always a plus!!!! I have hooker shorties never a leak, used to have headman long tubes on a 70 monte carlo & the flanges were thin & I kept having leaking issues so I've stayed away from them. There is a lot of great advice on headers on this forum, but headers are a great idea.....

great that's good to know after world of wheels I might really look into putting some headers on. Thanks that would make it a lot easier if I took the cap off never thought of that, cant wait until the weather gets better.

Slicks on a well running L98 could honestly probably do it. Sticky track, good tire, good air, you're pretty much set to tick off a 13.9. Full exhaust would certainly help. It's easy, no leaks if you're mildly intelligent.

I don't know what to tell you. I have a 1992 which is a little heavier than the earlier years, certainly more than a Formula. Ran a 14.4 bone stock with a 2.5 second 60 ft. Laugh at me, I deserve it yes I know. Point being, it was on a slick track with horrible street tires, and I trapped 98 mph. Surely on slicks on a grippier track a 13.9 was possible. Maybe you need a tune, or just a tune up?

Re: what would it take to run 13's
My car first hit 13's on street tires with nothing more than hooker 2055's 3" flowmaster, and 2800 stall. 2.77 gears even. 1.89 60' amd 13.89 at 97-ish mph i think it was.
L98 with all the bolt ons and drag wheels touch 12's. I went 12.99 and 12.95 at 103.8 in 188 ft DA air. 3400-3450 lbs race weight
They can scoot. If yours doesnt its either alot heavier or is a tired motor in need of a tuneup and refresh build, but mine had 160k on it so hard to say how tired it was

I think I even saw that a 2002 trans am had 275hp which is completely wrong. That's just another example. I looked at the article through my phone so I could be wrong but that makes me not trust any numbers on it. Senior Member

Re: what would it take to run 13's
There are quite a few out there. Mine wasnt brand new it had near 160k miles on it when it went 12.9's. but engine was mostly highway mileage and babied.
True test is to dyno it. Strong bolt on l98's with different intakes or atleast big tube tpi stuff should be well over 240-250 hp. Some 260's. mine was 254 lean. Would have hit 260 whp with more fuel and it ran 12's on that lean tune

Re: what would it take to run 13's
Definately not an impossible time, I have seen a LT1 Auto car with an intake and muffler swap run similar times in good weather as well.
That being said I have a 5,300 lbs truck that run a 13.98 with only 296 RWHP. In a car that is a good 1,500 lbs lighter I could see the same driveline picking up over a full second.

Yup 254 whp 315 wtq. Same day my friends 95z28 with headers exhaust 3.73's and tune thru stock auto went 12.9 at 106. On street tires. But thats more like a 275-280 whp car. I seen stock lt1's dyno 260 thru auto

Re: what would it take to run 13's
You'll want to monitor air conditions at your tracks altitude to see what the air density altitude is. Closer to sealevel the better you will run.
My trans am ls1 car would run 12.1's at -800 feet da. Up in 2500 it would run 12.5's
My l98 record run was 188 ft and normal summer air would run 13.2-13.3

yea. Im hoping my combo will get me into the 13"s First time running at a track this coming spring. But I would think a well tuned bolt on L98 is into the 13 sec Range for sure.

Heads, cam, headers using EBL. 84 Xfire on street tires. It dyno'd at 285/347.
Best ET was 13.3, best trap 104.5. Weight was 3250 wet. The run in the video was 13.7.
And yes it had the Xfire manifold and twin TBIs.

Re: what would it take to run 13's
My dads L98 hit 13's stock, zero mods not even a k&n engine wise. It ran slicks and he had what he called a cheater converter, stalled at just over 3k and hit hard.
I didn't like it. Street tires were impossible, it made too much noise lol.... But it did lock up so he could cruise it
