So I've recently have revived a 85 z28 from a family member it has been sitting for over 10 years and ran before it went into storage. I want to get this car up and going and want to know what I should do.. (besides fluids and battery) also want to know what I could do for a decent power increase for the 305 down the road. I have a turbocharger intercooler,piping.ect. for a small turbo setup dont want to blow the motor but want to get a decent increase In power for a little fun . Also wondering what would decent headers and exhaust run me?
If you want to start increasing power output, start with exhaust. A good set of headers leading to a full 3" exhaust (if you're going to run a single exhaust) will do the trick. I spent about $1400 on my exhaust by the time it installation was all said and done, but I got a top quality system (Hooker Headers, GMMG Catback) and did most of the work myself in my driveway. If you're looking for the bare minimum and don't care about having a stainless steel system with ceramic coated headers, then you're probably looking at about $700-$800 if you install it yourself.
After exhaust, you could look into doing a cam and heads if you really want to see some significant gains. I'm currently building up my 305 with my ultimate goal being one horsepower per cubic inch at the flywheel. So far I'm at around 230hp with exhaust and cam which is pretty good considering I started with about 165hp stock. Next stop is a nice set of heads which should hopefully give a big boost over what I have now.
