Project camaro
Hey everyone, I have an 89 RS, all stock when I got it and I fell in love. for the last 6 years I've been really wanting to build the baddest car for the street and I've been thinking I want to give autocross a try. I guess what this thread is about is i want some advice, and i'd also like to share what I've done and maybe there's better parts out there I don't know about yet. I've come along way from the first time I picked up a socket wrench and called it a vice grip, favorite tool now is the breaker bar with a 5' pipe heh. I figured the best place to start was with suspension, and to be honest as much as I'm on summit racing looking through superchargers, long blocks, bareblocks, cylinder head kits I've simply not had the experience of doing so, and didn't trust it quite yet. Now I'm at the part where I'm getting ready to add some power. So I guess I should start it here. My plan is to set up a dual 3" exhaust system, get new headers with a cylinder head set, I was looking at a decent roots style supercharger w/ manifold that would be close enough to the engine I think I could fit the carb on top, and not have a clearance issue. Here's what I was thinking and it sounds kindave dumb, but I want to eventually buy a shortblock RHS engine (400 or 502 ci) and I was hoping I could find a nice dual quad carb roots style supercharger and cylinder head set that would be compatible with the L03 305 and also could be used on the future RHS block down the road, I think thats the best start for me because I want to get the whole exhaust system set up before I get to swapping the engine, figure this is a good way to chunk it up, the cylinder heads for sure are going to be the biggest choke so really those are most important for now.
I was also looking into a new rear end. As far as I know the Moser 12 bolt custom rear end is really top end. Its 5gs for everything from the yoke to 4 piston Wilwood brakes w/parking brake. It seems like a really solid package deal. I know they had an issue in the past with messing up the differential case, but from what I understand they make their own torque arm to fix the problem. Im interested in abs but its not offered for my year, is this something I can opt for and then get parts from somewhere else to make work?
Im curious as to what you guys think would be a better investment to start with. I worry about the trans not being able to handle power from the engine, think it supports like 300 torque? On the other side, I know you can opt for a bigger gear drive ratio, but dont you loose top end off that? unless the overall better engineering and technology wastes less force going through the axles.
As for the what I've done; front drilled slotted rotors, adjustable kyb agx shocks and struts in front and back, wonder bar, sway bars, control arms, panhard relocation kit(support bar for 3" ex), panhard bar, control arm relocation, proforged steering assembly, stronger lowering springs (1"front, 1.5" back), dual 12" subs with new speakers
I've done various other repairs due to the rubber rotting from sitting to long, not for performance though. I am using 1.25" wheel spacers (sigh) trying to get more turn radius because Im tired of a 4 point turns..
I have for the near future projects upper caster/camber QA1, an astro van shaft, 35' 3" pipe and a 3" hydraulic pipe bender, 2 catalytic converters and x pipe, and 2 varex mufflers, 3 point tower brace, holley sniper EFI 800 cfm kit(fuel pump ect)
I ran into a couple issues, like for the relocation kit, it adds an arm from axel housing to panhard, but after installing I cant get the rear sway bar to line up without a lowering spacer, so I got a 2" skyjacker spacer and now I need lowering end links. If you know any good ones, I've been having trouble finding nice end links that aren't in a kit. I think I also need one for the front because I got the biggest sway bar I could find hallowed, it bolted in, but I think it rubs against the wonder bar, or atleast close enough to do so under flex. Also sounds kinda weird but when Installed the steering, the pivot arm was really tight and I spun it just enough to get it bolted to the frame and I wonder if I was supposed to loosen it more, the old one would spin to whatever direction you held it and the new one I had to hit against the ground just to get it to turn a little bit, will it loosen up over time? or am I throwing away power at the steering pump?
So just gonna say this, I didn't start with sub frame connectors and that was stupid lol. Its number one on the priority list, frame started squeaking
so I adjusted the shocks down. I found some really nice bolt-on inner and outer connectors I want to get, so that eventually when I get a welder I can just weld them in.
Anyways, curious about your guys' thoughts on any of this.

Re: Project camaro
Update
Got 3" shortys from hawks with blow off valves after. I went with Edelbrocs Vortec 7116 for the intake manifold so I can use the holley efi kit. I also got bolt on subframe connectors inner and outter.
Dont really know much about bending your own exhaust system, but should be an interesting project to take on. gonna try and use 16 ton jack bender from harbor freight.
