wtf? viper????

ok on the way to pick up my g/f from the airport tuesday i noticed a older looking black viper. just for laughs i pulled next to him and paced him. he took off and so did i. next thing i know i'm doin 120 and pullin away. we both got off at the airport exit and he asks what i have done, and when i told him a couple bolt ons he called BS and took off all pissed off. i still dont know how i beat him. probally pretty pissed my car which i paid 6500 for a couple months ago beat his $65,000 machine. i thought they had over 400 hp? could be the fact that it was s ome old rich fart. so what kinda hp, tq, and 1/4 do theses have? like i said it was an older style one...

I'm not to sure but I think they had around 400hp and were low 13s in the quarter. Its hard to think that the Viper is almost 10 years old with minor body changes. GOOD KILL!!!

Maybe a bad driver? Or could be the fact that a lot of viper owners are rich yuppies who know jack about cars and don't maintain them, so it's possible that it wasn't running great either. At any rate, I'd put that viper kill in my sig. if I was you!

Thats amazing! I wish i could lay claim to beating a Viper! Ive seen one at my local track, and it was running mid 12s all day. The newer ones had 450 hp, im not sure what the older ones have. My friend in his 2000 Z28 6speed convertible raced one from a stoplight a few months ago, and got his doors blown off. Anyway, great kill!

from what i have read and seen around town adn at the track vipers are a bit tricky to drive. the power band is not overly long and is very peaky. the torque is ungodly, around 475ft/lbs now i think.
last time i saw a viper acr at the track the guy tried to launch it and stopped withthe nose of the car pointed directly at the tree
a lot of the mags that did road course tests semmed to make a big deal out of picking the correct gear to get out fo the corners with any speed.
great kill man!

later

This guy in Tucson just dropped a Viper Engine in a Jeep Wrangler.
He built the 4 wheel drive to handle the HP/Torque, on the launch, so he basically has an AWD Viper in one light body. That is going to be UNBELIEVABLY fast as soon as he works out all the kinks.

I'm pretty sure the first vipers were 400 hp. After that they were 450, now they're 460 in the ACR. The 2003 is 500.

I agree with tom84L69 I think they always came with 400 horsepower. They had 450lb/ft and were tricky to drive. My cousin had one and hated it because as they said it is very hard to drive and very spikey in the power.

First off, I don't think a Jeep Wrangler is any lighter than a Viper... I Had always thought it was a REAL heavy car until I finally looked at the specs, it's about as heavy as a thirdgen (if my memory isn't that bad).

Older Vipers may have some kinks we aren't taking into consideration and I believe they were originally a bit heavier. The Transmission is kinda funky and the power curves are very narrow as was said before. I believe the original vipers had a 5ish 0-60 which isn't quite the same as a 4.0 like those built today. Anyhow, the guy didn't know how to drive that car in particular and he wasn't fully exploiting it's capabilities by taking you on on the highway, I bet it would have been a close 1/4 drag... but it sounds like he was just some snoody rich bastard.

The only reason I'd buy a "supercar" would be for the looks... but I don't see the sense in anything over $60k

My ultimate aspiration would be a '64 hardtop 'vette with the split rear window.

I rode in a couple of different vipers at Thunder Hill here in CA. One was a 93 roadster and the other was a 97 Coupe. 93 was pretty stock cause of the class he was racing and the 97 was in the prepaired class and running about 525 hp. Between the two, it seemed like the newer one had a better power band cause he'd just step on it out of a corner with the RPM's pretty low compaired to the earlier viper. Could have been just the drivers preference though, who knows lol. Either way, both were a hell of a lot of fun to ride in

Just so you know, split window coupe Corvettes were only produced in 1963.

About the Viper V10 in a Wrangler...

I'm an avid fourwheeler and off-roader. I remember reading about a TJ a few years ago in in some magazine's Top Truck Challenge. It was either Petersen's 4wheel & off-road or Fourwheeler magazine. Anyway, this particular Wrangler blew the competition out of the water with its sub-11 sec quarter mile passes. The guy got a brand new motor from Dodge to drop into the TJ. The motor alone cost like $30000 . He also had some Mopar bolt-ons on it.
