66 stang vs 85 iroc

right now im driving a bone stock 85 iroc, the one with the 305.. now, a friend of mine has a 66 stang, he says its got a 302 with 290 horsies? i dont know stangs that great, but i thought they only came with the 289s in 66.. could be wrong about that, could be a transplanted motor.. dunno.. also dont know if that 290 would be net or what.. huh.. but.. suppose hes bone stock like me.. think i could take him?

A 289 is a V8, some came stock with 2BBL. My friend has '65 w/ a rebuilt 289 pushing around 260hp. Now, he had 2:7x's for gears and ran a 14.6 . You have to be careful, if that '66 is like my friend's it had all option delete including Powersteering and the car only weighs around 2400lbs.

The 4.6 is only 280ci.

yeah, the 289 is definately a V8, the 302 didnt come around until 69 or 70 i think. the hp rating was probably gross, net ratings came in the early 70s. thats about all the info i have, sorry. by the way, which motor do you have in the IROC? hopefully its the TPI engine. race him and let us know how it turned out!

The 289 and 302 are the same engine with different strokes (2.87 vs. 3.0)

There were 4 different 289's from the factory, the A code, C code, D code, and K code. They all made 200+ hp from the factory, but the one to really watch out for was the K code. It made 271 hp and 312 ft lbs. of torque. Shelby used a hopped up version of this in the GT350's making 306 hp and 329 ft lbs of torque.

Basically, anything you can do to a 302, you can do to a 289 so there's no telling what your friend's got. He may have a 302. Like Mark said...the car is light, so it's going to be quick.

I think you'll have a pretty good race, if your running well. 289's are not engines that should be underestimated...they can make a lot of power. Hell, didnt they put a built 289 in the first GT40's? But anyway, if his is close to stock it is a race you can win...but you will have to pull off a great launch. What transmission does he have? If he has an auto, you should have a slight advantage because of your 3.27's and the 700r4's first gear. Like I said earlier, learn how to nail your launch. That'll make him play catch up the whole way down the strip. Its an interesting match...Let us know what happens!!

well i asked him how many horsies he was making, and he told me 290 at the wheels.. ehh.. a ported 302 with a bigger cam cant get *that* high can it? he said when he swapped the cams he didnt make that much horsepower, so theres probably somethin else out of tune with it.. and yah, mine's the tpi of course, somewhere around 220 horse.. hopefully hes mistaken about his 290 net hes also driving a manual tho, which could be bad or good i think.. hes never actually raced before, so most likely he'll spin his tires and/or miss a gear.. hehe it'll be fun either way, i just gotta practice my launches a bit.. not sure when i'll get the chance to race, but when i do, i'll sure let you guys know! thanks for all the input guys!!

mmm...there are stock displacement 302's running around the streets putting 330+ hp to the rear wheels. 290 isn't all that uncommon or hard to obtain with a simple heads/cam/intake package.

If I'm not mistaken didn't '85 IROCs come with no more than 190 HP at the flywheel.

in 85' IROCs came with 215 hp, and T/As had 205 hp (due to a more restrictive intake), in 86' the numbers went down to 190 hp though, because of a change in the camshaft

Ya 290hp is not too hard to get at the wheels. Especially without emissions, so figure, no cats, decent cam, heads and intake and 290 hp is very easily done. Watch out if hes got a newer T5 in it, we had a 66 with a 302 T5 combo and it was pretty quick. Race him, and good luck.

lets see. how can I tell you this with out bringing disgrace to the iroc name? O-well, he will beat you. not buy much but you dont have much of a chance. But race him anyway, maybe his engine or tranny will blow and you will win. not much a chance though.
