Had some fun with a C4 last night

I guess it was a late 80's vette I pulled up to late last night around 3AM. I was coming home from the clubs and was giving a female friend of mine a ride home when I pull next to a beautiful black C4 vette. It had a nice sounding exhaust, and some late model rims that looked really good on it. Both cars were automatics.

Well, i pulled next to him and he girlfriend and we kinda just each gave a "hey, what's up?" nod and pulled away from the light normally. Well, you know how these things start, one guy will want to be ahead and it escalates into a race. We didn't race at this series, but at the next red, it was on!

Light turns green and we are off. We only do short 0-50 races since the lights aren't spaced out to far and they were all turning red for us!

To make a long story short, we ran 3 times and all 3 times we were dead even to where we let off to slow for the next red light (around 50MPH) COuldn't really open it up too much.

At the final light, he rolls down the window and says "Hey, who won?" I just shrug and reply "I'll call it a tie if you do" So we agreed an parted off with a wave.

It was a good time...first serious race i've had since last summer

sweet race! if you guys had gone the full quarter mile, you probably would have edged him out, being as you had better flowing exhaust. C4s are great from a stop to about 70mph, because of the TPIs low end torque. They can go 14 flat stock. I ran my 89 vette stock and my mph was right on with yours.

C4s are one of the best years for the vette. Besides the mid 60s the C4s were the nicest. The C5s look to foreign and the 50s were a little to moddest (Didn't care for 70s, except early). Nice race, although I would think a C4 would have won in the 1/4.

i was thinking that because of his poor 60 ft (2.4) that if he got a better launch (somewhere in the 2.0 - 2.1 range), he could hit 14 flat or 13.9. A stock TPI C4 is only good for low 14s to high 13s, and thats with a good driver. because Mustang5L5 has much better flowing exhaust, and the underdrive pulleys, he probably would have beat the vette in the top end. Trust me on this, the TPI vettes run out of breath after about 80mph. The 700R4 shifts into 3rd at about 70mph, and factor the standard 2.59 gear ratio, and its not going anywhere fast. They only raced to 50, had it been to 100+, he probably would have edged the vette out. But youre 100% right about the C4s being the best corvettes

hey mike, when are you going to get a 13 second pass out of your stang. You should just post your trap speed in your sig till you get a decent launch, lol. I suppose its nice to be able to say you have a mid-14 second car and then smoke a 14 flat car from a roll.

Track opens the first week of April, so i hope to get it then. I want to try to install my Cobra Intake Manifold and 65mm Throttle body before I go. I also have a T-5 tranny and all the parts to swap my car to a 5spd sitting in my basement, but I am too lazy and haven't gotten around to it. I would love to hit 13's with the AOD first though.

The main reason for my poor 60 foot times was my choice in lowering springs. I went with some very stiff springs that allowed ZERO weight transfer off the line. The rear end doesn't plant like is used to. Before i put them on, i was nailing 2.1 60 footers. I took the springs out a month ago. My car wasn't liking all the potholes and railroad tracks in Boston. Last night i had a better lauch then at the track, car squatted perfectly and hooked. I'll definitely get a better launch at my track now.

I need to add two converters to my off-road pipe. I need to pass inspection and hate to keep swapping pipes. Plus I need to quiet my car down somewhat. It way too loud when i warm it up for work at 6AM and when i come home late at nights. Not sure how much these cats are gonna hurt me, but they will cost some top end. I also added some weight to the car with the GT interior since the seats are slightly heavier than my old base LX cloth seats were. Not much, but goal is to lose weight right?

I don't want to speculate what my car can or can't do. That time is my best and it's what I go by. I didn't want to start this thread as a war between 5.0's and C4s...just wanted to share an expeirence. On THAT night with THAT car in THOSE conditions, we tied. WHo know what would have happened if we had more room to open up. All I know is it woulda been fun!
