Who needs headers?

Do to the last Dyno run .. there are a few of us that need some headers.. I am looking to buy some maybe SLP Coated 1 5/8.. or something coated because i don't want them to rust out on me..

Maybe if we get enough we can get a group price or something.

Or can anyone give me some speed shops that sell headers..
I come from a small town and there is nothing around..

Thanks

I would totally be into this deal if it were in a couple months but I can't swing it right now. Two things of advice though...SLP headers are stainless steel, so it's really debatable whether you would need them coated at all. Secondly, if you want to get a good ceramic coat done, get it done by another company after you buy them. The coatings from the manufacturers are never as good as going to a specialty shop...and it doesn't cost you much more.

This place has the best prices on SLP parts in Canada, by a wide margin. This is where the shop you order from will get their SLP stuff.

flowtechs

I was trading info with the guys on another thread and it seems the flowtechs although not up to SLP quality seem to do ok and for under $200 I'll pay someone to install them (ugly job with A/C).

The SLPs are plus $500 CDN right ?!?!?!? Installation extra. Ouch.

Brant Performance has probably the best prices you'll find local. If you know Brantford at all, they are located on Grey St (92 i think) just off Clearance St. They are right beside Brant Foods. I bought my Flowtechs there for $169 + tax. You'll need the y-pipe as well which was another $160 + tax. When I first went in there, they tried to sell me a set of coated MAC headers and y-pipe. They come coated with MAC's coating, which I've heard is crap. They wanted $500 for the coated MACs, which are 1 5/8.

The SLP's are nice, and by the time you figure out the cost of headers + having them coated, the SLP's would be close in cost (if they run $500 CAN). The SLP's are 1 3/4" which would be on the big size for a N/A 305.

The SLP's are available with a 1 5/8" primary as well.

Is that with coating or without? $900 is very very high, but I've heard from many sources that the SLP ones are the best for our cars. I was originally gonna go with the Hooker headers but decided to hold off for a bit and save up some extra cash to get the SLP ones. I'll have to sell a kidney, but to me it's the best choice since I want the 1-3/4 primary.

I emailed them to get a quote and about 3 months later I got the reply. THe cost of the headers and the installation kit worked out to roughly $900 bux.I belive the going rate is approx 498.00 U.S. for the headers and y pipe and another 69.00 for the installation kit.I'm not sure if they are coated or not. But that is very expensive for some fancy pipes. I will probably not go this route because its just too costly.Besides all my modification money gets eaten up by STUPID ONGOING NEVER ENDING REPAIRS!!!!

I bought the Edelbrock TES headers and Y-Pipe for a little over $800. They were not coated. They fit in perfect as will the SLP's.Remember one thing, you get what you pay for. The flowtech's are cheap and a pain to install. They SLP's or the Edelbrock set up is they way to go. Anything else is just uncivilized. Ha ha, just thaught that'd be funny. Anyway, buy good once so u never have to buy again. Also the quality of the way the header is made is another thing. My headers were nice and smooth inside and out, I know for a fact the Flowtech's are not.

I agree, the flowtechs are pretty cheap and not the best quality. I got the y-pipe today and the welds on them leave alot to be desired. Headmans on the other hand, aren't that much more than the Flowtechs, but have much better build quality, better plug access, and are 1 5/8".

I want in on the deal, the only thing is I care for though is if they have AIR plugs on them. I dunno about most of you but my car still has 3 more e-checks and I need those. Whether I go intake or exhaust, I have to do them anyways. The dyno run just showed me how restricted my engine is (hand polishing = 40 ft/lb more torque!!!). I'm liking the $320 route headers & y-pipe plus installation. According to some tests done (I'll find the article somewhere) For mild street/strip combinations, going large and $$$ on the headers didn't translate to much more over mild and cheap. Test was done on a 350 block and I imagine a 305 would react the same too. It appears as though some serious backpressure/specific flow characteristics is needed by these sbc's in street configurations. It turned out in the article the better designed middle of the pack headers gave the best hp boost overall AND hp gain per dollar ratio minus taxes and installation. If someone knows the article please post it.

I'm cheap when it comes to headers

Glad to hear the Flowtechs are cheap atleast we'll get along cause I am cheap too. I bought some Hedman headers for my '88 way back and they worked great I put about 30,000kms on it and the Hedmans were pretty cheap but were a real pian to install -- I think this is the case with any 3rd gen ?

I thought the Flowtechs were built (like the Hedmans) such that you could just bolt up your existing exhaust (y-pipe) to the header collectors once they were installed ?

thx,
RP.

Hey 92 zeddar

I'm pricing out a bunch of different headers. I'll have the numbers in a day or two.
I would really like the SLP's, not sure if they're in the budget right now. I'm also pricing other things.
Years ago, I bought a set of Hedmans. The quality wasn't to bad. What I had done, was have the shipping paint lightly sand blasted off (for $40) and high heat painted them. Three years later, when I sold the car, they still looked like new.
I may go that way again.
Just thought I'd pass that on, because the paint used on headers is only to keep them from rusting until they are installed. It usually burns off real fast.
