Has anyone ever had trouble with their V.A.T.S.?

Had the car out for most of the day yesterday, it was running incredibly good for a change. So the wife decides she wants to go to the Home Depot to pick up some paint. So I drop the top and we head out into the magnificent sunshine. All is going well, until I decide to make a quick stop. We stopped for about 10 minutes, when we all get back into the car I turn the key and absolutely nothing happens. This has occured on 2 other occaisions, once my wife tried to put the key in upside down, the other time was the same as this one(no irregular key incertion). These incidences happened nearly 2 years ago and up until yesterday had not occured since. I knew it was a vats thing, we waited 20 minutes and sure enough with the first turn of the key the ever expanding bottomless moneypit came to life.I'm just wondering if any other 1989-1992 owners have expierienced sporatic vats problems? Has anyone bypassed the system?

are you sure its the key? there are lots of other things that will prevent the car from starting. i had a problem one time similar to yours. turned out to be the trany switch was not in the park postion and the computer still thought it was in gear.

I did not touch the gear selector, I waited for 20 minutes and the car started immediatley. I posted this problem when it first happened 2 years ago and it was sujjested that the ignition cylinder might be getting worn and thats what was triggering the problem. My car is a fairly high miliage car (200 000 km) so these problems keep poping up.
