saved a bunch of money

Since I bought the Formula I have been dealing with a vibration problem at hiways speeds. I automatically assumed it was the bent steel driveshaft syndrome and have been shopping around eBay for an aluminum DS for a few months.

If only I had known about this solution way back when I had my '85 -- I put about 250,000kms on that car much of it shaking down the hiway what a FREAKING pain I would have bought a shaft in an instant had I known it was the problem.

Well anyway my '91 did the same thing so and I was about to buy one a used DS for $275 CDN and thought I ought to do a wheel balance first just in case and guess what ?

NO MORE SHAKING.

No kidding I drove down the hiway for about 50kms just to experience the sensation of a 3rd gen at hiway speeds and smooth as glass...

adious,
RP.

Good to hear you solved your problem. Tire balancing is such a little detail but it helps immensly. You wonder why I like crusing at 200 kph? hehe

I always get my tires balanced... hence why I know for sure my ds is F-ED... My car's minor virbration is in line with the standard steel driveshaft.

Steel Driveshaft Stock

Critical RPM 7100-7300 RPM depending on condition
Half Critical Speed Vibrations exist at 3500-3600 RPM

Known facts

This DS will fragment and SHATTER at critical RPM releasing projectiles faster than a speeding bullet.

Most of these driveshafts ARE NOT design balanced, they are manufactured then balanced with weights. Corrosion and wear reduce the max critical rpm by as much as 500 RPM.

Not wanting to scare you but with a 0.70 ratio in 4th gear critical rpm is achieved at a measly 5000 rpm.... Its even less on a stick whose ratio is 0.65 I believe...

I had my tires balanced on my '85 about 20 times back then no one knew about the DS issue on IROCs. Like I said wish I knew back then. My '88 came with an aluminum DS so I never had a problem with it but again no one back then knew about the DS problem on 3rd gens.

I've heard of our DS's coming apart and my ratios are not standard. As I understand it my 5th gear is .73 and 4th is 1.0 same as 92zeddar and easySpeed. Sounds like I should be looking for an aluminum DS regardless. Thx for the heads-up.

Actually I spoke to a thirdgen owner in Cali who had his driveshaft shatter on track... a chunk came through just inches from his back... lucky he had short legs else if he had his seat back, it would have come through his side.... For him it was a real eye opener... the sheer force is amazing... he won't use any metal there.. he spent on carbon fibre for his new ride.. his old one was totalled from that driveshaft...
