1/4 mile trick I read about last night

Hey All,

I read about this tip the other night. Seems this guy was trying to get that last iddy-bit out of his car and looking around for some tenths to steal back bought a shorter serpentine for the track that cut out his power steering pump and A/C.

According to this guy NOT ME (before everyone starts jousting with me !) he got back a clean two tenths with the short belt ?!?!

I've been thinking about it -- why am I turning my PS unit at the track ? For that matter why the A/C unit as well ? I think I will check out a new short belt they are only $25.

Stock is what 94 inches long ? Probably pull atleast 6 inches off the U-drive pullies took 3 off and I got 10hp well that is a different story eh ?

Just thought I'd pass it along for those of you heading to the track tomorrow...
RP.

I drove for 2 years with no power steering in my Camaro. For the 1/4 mile you will have no problem making the turn. It is actually quite easy to turn once you are in motion. But as I'm sure you expected... I have to say that you aren't going to see huge results.

I have no power steering. Just have to strong arm it. Go for it palric. Anything is worth a try. Get a belt that just runs the alternator and the water pump if it is possible with your setup. It should help a little.

Just don't try parellel parking without PS. Once your driving faster than a crawl, its just as easy as a system with PS.

Or, get a set of skinnies for up front

LOL! Yeah that would probably be tough. Never had to try it yet,and don't plan on it either. SOme drag lites would help. I need to buy a set for the front of my car. Anyone know someone who has some for sale at a reasonable price? Let me know if so.

Thanks
Keiran

I stick to my theory that the A/C pulley takes next to NO horsepower to turn when the clutch is off!! You can spin the dang thing with one of those tiny fans that take 1 AA Battery.. LOL

that's why they make underdrive pulleys...

I got a set and yes they do make a difference, you just have to get a proper alternator pulley to keep the voltage up.

Luckilly March also makes a power and amp series set too.

Problem is the water pump. I guess if you are letting cool really well before each run. As long as you have a electric fan that is. If not you have no cooling what so ever.

Manual fan switches are great for track.. I can keep my temp at 180 till I decide to mash the pedal...

Another matter is why have your coolant pump run so high? I thought about that even as a daily driver, its kinda unecessary, I get caught in downtown Toronto traffic all the fricken time and don't worry about overheating, only at stops longer than 25 mins idling there will I need to turn the fan on, even then I only turn it on at 105 usually.
