answers:

1. legally, all licensed vehicles are required by law to have all emissions equipment that was installed at the factory on the vehicle and operating

2. once a car is 20 years old it is exempt from emissions testing

that's not what i heard

from what i did my research on, if the car originally came with the equipment, then the equipment must still be on the car, it is just exempt from emission testing...

on the other hand you can always swap in a new engine and just run it under hotrod class, but you would still need cats

you're not exempt from road inspection...

cops in the GTA have been known to look for emissions equipment, air tubes, smog pump, cats...

I've already had it happen to me in york region

they don't have to check if it passes emissions or not, they just look for it...

Correct- all factory/OEM emissions equipment that was installed in/on the car when it was new must remain on the vehicle. Just being 20-years-old + doesn't exempt any vehicle from this.

Keep in mind that there are also two sets of guidelines here:

1) Federal -i.e. Transport Canada

2) Provincial- i.e. Ontario Highway Traffic Act

Federal government is what approves vehicles for safety/emissions/standards, provinces include vague statements in their Highway Traffic Acts stating that modifications/alterations not conforming to the Federal standards and/or those specifically laid out in the provincial HTA are committing an offense.

To simplify: Federal government says "all f-bodies entering/built in Canada in 1983 had these devices installed- and they should remain in order for said vehicle to retain its status as an approved vehicle that is drivable on Canadian roads"

provincial highway traffic act says "yes- we agree with this and we will also add... (i.e. emissions testing) and if you violate this, the penalty is xxxxxxxx"

Emissions testing is a provincial thing- presence of emissions devices on cars is based on federal guidelines. The provinces may expand upon the detail level, and they may be the only "enforcers" of these guidelines- but they are still federal guidelines.

I also had my 1983 355 tested under HotRod status.... but the tolerances aren't much better. The only real benefit is the fact that they wave the visual.

Your 1983, you are fine.
I, on the other hand, will be screwed.
Hey Jeff, next time my car needs testing I'm taking it to you.
I like your lack of visual. And being a fellow f-bodder, we can cut a deal...

from what ive been told, if you have done any modifications to your car, then they will be more leniant as modifying a car is not illegal, of course by this i mean not takin the cats off and such. I put headers on my 85 z28, 350 cam, accel hi output ignition coil. I am in the process of installing dual exhaust with 2 cats, the only thing that was removed was the heat riser stove pipe to the aircleaner which was also removed in favour of a chrome aircleaner. I am assuming that with 2 cats and a brand new exhaust that my car shall pass, with a good tune up of course. At least i hope it will?

oh ya, and i also have no ECM on my car, it wasnt made with one, also i installed a breather cap on the valve covers and ran a vapor tube to the air cleaner.

if you have 2 cats and your car is in tune, you have nothing to worry about.
