the gremlins are back!
driving today... park the car....
go back to turn it on 30 minutes later and when i turn the key in the ignition, it makes that sound as though the car is already on and you're trying to turn the ignition... you know... that loud annoying sound.... KCCHH!
anyhow, later today... driving home and my car stalls at the stop sign.
i try to turn it on... it's chuggin' but it won't start..... i pop the hood look everything seems to be normal... only thing is my car was running a little hot...
i go to turn it on, it's chuggin chuggin chuggin and it finally starts but i see the rpms going down so i freaken gun it like crazy and speed all the way home running through the stopsigns....
it seemed as though it was running fine once the engine temperature dropped....

You may have some grinded teeth either on your starter or flywheel. Once you get that 'grinding' sound, you will get it again...if the the starter happens to contact the affected area during startup.

I had that grinding sound on my buick when I tried to start it up. And after running the car for awhile and shut off and try to restart it was a chugging sound. I ended up having to wait like 10 mins before it would start. Turned out to be my starter. There was a piece (can't remember exactly which one) that was dying. After replacing the starter though it was fine
If the starter solenoid is old, it will be prone to heak soak (especially on hot days) from the engine. If you wait a bit and it starts fine, change your starter motor.
Easy, it's pretty easy to do. I did mine in my garage. Buy the new one, swap, and bring the old one back. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the electrical connections on the solenoid - or you will crack it!
oh, and disconnect the battery completely. The power (red) wire goes from the battery to your starter.

how much does a starter cost?
i already told myself that if it's the fuel pump i am putting the car away for winter storage... lol

You can get one from crappy tire for around 200. When you bring the old one back, they give you $50 or so for it. (can't really remember now, it's been like 3 years since I'v changed mine).
Do you want me to price one for you from my supplier? I basically pay what mechanic shops pay for parts...

Turn the key to the ON position, roll the car, push clutch, put gear in 1st or 2nd and let the clutch out - don't 'pop' it but let it out quite smooth and quick. Car should start right up. If id doesn't, you need someone to push harder/faster. Once it's running, don't stall it - if you do - repeat above.

Maybe you should practice it a couple of times on an incline somewhere, so that if you should ever have to do it you'll know for sure how. Nothing worse than being frustrated that your car won't start, and trying it for the very first time.

i actually doubt it's the starter
mainly because why would my car stall if the start died?

I agree. The problem definitely rests with the starter. Check the connectors. You'll need to jack up the car on the front passenger side and crawl under there (toward the rear of the block on the passenger side.)

actually i believe the problem to be the car overheating...
i'm guessing the computer automatically shuts it off and won't let it start again until the engine temperature goes down.
i am letting the car sit in my garage until i figure out how to wire up a switch for the fan

Why did your car overheat. Do you have the original waterpump and thermo in their?
After having nightmare after nightmare with this (when I first got the car), I did the timing chain, waterpump, Jet 160 fan switch, 160 thermostat, new rad/hoses and haven't had a problem since. Car stays right in the center of the temp guage and that's the hottest it'll get...even when it's 40 degrees outside and I'm driving like a fool...

Alex,
You may want to get your fuel pump checked. A faulty fuel pump can be the culprit. When the pump gets hot it just dies and no fuel gets to the fuel rail; and therefore, the car stalls.
Worth the check.
