Lap timer

Hey guys, havent talked to you guys in awhile. Mainly because I have been to busy, and away from my car at University. O well... I posted this in Aftermarket, but this is my fave bored so posting here too. Worth a real good chunk of my mark:

---------------------

Hey guys, I am studying to be an Industrial Designer with a niche in aftermarket automotive parts. I need you help!

I need to design a timer, and what I am most definately doing Lap timer. Something you would set up an external part at the start of a track, and the in car part would display your lap times, average time, total time ect.

So what I need to know is:

1) What else would you like from a product like this? (Like intereact with computer, display lateral gs, whatever)

2) How much would you pay? (Or would you buy at all?)

---

Thanks guys! This probably wont become a reality, but I would like to get some good market research and I know you guys probably have some kick *** suggestions.

As you probably know timers like that are already available. I saw a post about them a few days ago - might have been on the CASC board.

It would be nice to have but it would be one of the last things I would buy - I'd put the money toward something to make the car go faster or maybe just buy a case of beer.

I here you... the market is a little narrow for something like this, but thankfully I only have to design it...

Well in addition to lap timing I'd like to see the option to expand the timer for timing single sections on the track too. Incorporating a 2way radio and some weather information would also be useful.

I'd make the section timers, 2way radio and weather statistics optional addons to keep costs down on a base model to appeal to a wider market.

For the details on lap and section timing it should record your best, worst, avg, mean, and overall section times for a set # of laps. This would be important to see if the handling of a car is degrading in any certain area to help diagnose chassis/suspension setups or diagnose engine/drivetrain issues.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion Rega. There is alot of info that people want to be there, and I think in a semi-high stress situation like racing, it could be a little bit of information overload. What I am thinking is having it cycle through different scress, some having past lap time, and another having average, best and worst, and of course having stage and lap time as a constant.

Anyone else have some suggestions? I know this is a product that you probably wouldnt be interested in if it was out. What could interest you? What should it look like?
