Down for a while now...
The rear main seal is pissing oil like crazy. I've had an oil leak since first time it started but always thought it was the oil pan, now it has to be the rear seal. This is a good excuse to pull the motor and have the short block redone and balanced.
Not sure if I'm gonna balance what I've got, or buy the parts and do what I've wanted to do for a while.
Gone till the end of summer at least, maybe this whole season...

It's probably for the best though.

Talked to dad, so far the plan is to have the whole guts sent to Montreal to have balanced, then have it put back together.
Don't have the money to go all out right now, so we'll just do up what we have now, but do it right this time.

I don't think its necessary to send your stuff to be balanced out of town.
As much as i hate to say it, Larry @ West Carleton has THE BEST equipment for balancing & machining a block. He IS capable of doing excellent work, but i think that's "if you're special" as i've had nothing but bad luck with him. in fact, i think he's absolutely useless when it comes to building a sbc.
Engines Extra has balancing equipment, that's where mine is. What i WOULD do is yank that speedpro cam & look at a good Comp grind.

I was thinking of giving the guy who posted on midnightruns the job to redo the block. He works at engines extra and seems like he knows what he's doing. I also talked to the guy thats come over and helped us recently. He works at Lafrance performance in Cornwall. The have an engine dyno too, I may throw it on there while it's out and tune it on the dyno. They send they're stuff to Montreal to be balanced. takes about 3 days. I have no money to buy new parts, i might have to work with what I've got.

I vote engines extra aswell. My block is there now, actually I get it back today after work. Stroked do you use the east end or west end shop?? The east end shop has some good talented builders!! They actually have a pic on the wall of a 2nd gen doing a massive wheelie, it belonged to Bruce who is one of the boyz that works there.

Well, I went and saw the short block yesterday, all of the guts out of it. Looks like a piece of **** went through the oil galley and scored some bearings down to copper, so i need new rod bearings. The bearings weren't even all the same kind. Some were the Clevite race bearings i supplied the guy who originally put it together, and some were ???. Anyways I don't have any money and it's not going back together until it's balanced and new bearings...
91wrROHs, Bruce Pearly i think its spelled, yes he has some very good talent.
Dave, stick to those Clevite 77 P bearings, they tend to "give" a little more & machining doesnt have to be as near perfect as if you use an H series bearing. Who knows what else that moron screwed up on the block, have it all checked if you can. Copper scoring on the edges can be from a main cap misalignment, and it could also be from a very bad balance. If its in the middle, then something did go through there like you said.

It's all going out and getting completely balanced. New rod bearings, crank polished, posibbly a new cam, Comp XE, and maybe a new double pumper to replace the vac sec.
