Drive Clean

Can I buy a drive clean pass? Anyone know of where to locate one?

Alternatively, does anyone have a pre 88 vin with ownership papers they would want to sell? I don't want the car, just the vin tags and ownership...

Yeah- maybe they could risk their license/e-test centre certification sending stuff to people on the internet.

Perhaps you should ask "who can get a car to pass an e-test even with a pile of modifications"- as in a legitimate activity- re-tuning.

I would be interested in a shop in the Ottawa-area that is able to "re-tune" cars as well- driving to T.O. for an e-test is a pain.

I was thinking more along the lines of sending me a pm...

'Yeah I know a place - call me and we can arrange details...'

Something like that for example. I need somewhere that will blindly pass me.

Will not pass visual. Might pass sniffer...

I'll figure it out eventually. Got a couple of months.

Why won't it pass? There should be no reason that it won't. There are alot of high horsepower cars out there passing, why won't yours?

I'm not sure. I haven't seen everything that is there / not there...in regards to equipment. All of the equipment may be included with the car, but its definitely not hooked up.

I got a deal on a car that I couldn't refuse and I figured I could find at least one way around the rules...
Rule being that a 'conditional pass' is not acceptable for vehicle transfer. Meaning that it has to pass, with no repair limit...

Its a carbed 355 making almost 500 hp. Air tubes are on the car, not attached. Cats are on the car, not attached. Smog pump, I'm not sure about.

It is the visual that worries me more than anything...

Did you buy that blue one that the guy had for sale for a while?

Anyway, there is no longer a visual check for smog equipment.

They look for a converter, exhaust leaks, healthy tires, and a functional gas cap. That's it

Reaper, what exactly do you have done to this motor? A 500HP SBC is not the easiest to pass emmissions with...unless you've got a dfi of some sort....or a hell of a lean underadvanced mixture!

give us some details, you should be quite the force to reckon with if it hooks up.

I would not worry about the visual at all, I too am worried about passing this year! First year I have had to e-test this engine.

Don't worry about it, you'll pass. My car did and I basically had the same engine combo as you.

PM me if it doesn't pass

It would be quite the feat to have a 355 making 500hp pass emissions with a carb. You're not going to pass anything without working cats and that much power and I'm thinking a cam swap will be the least of your swaps as well. What compression is this motor making?

I don't want to say too much yet about the whole car yet - but to answer a few questions from above:

10.2:1 Compression (PUMP GAS)
Full MSD Ignition: Pro Billet Distributor, 6AL Ignition Box

Speaking of Ottawa guys with a lot of thirdgens - has anyone heard of a guy who works (or used to work) at Future Shop on Merivale road who has over 10 of these 3rd gens?

I don't think you'll have much of a problem passing emmissions....but i highly doubt that motor would make much over 400HP if any, and definetly would make a lot more USEABLE TQ & HP with the right intake for that cam, an Edelbrock RPM or equiv.

I would be changing that 1st, and i'm sure it would pass emmissions with some high flow cats without any issues.

My ultimate goal is to pick up one per year at least. I may not be done yet for this year...

Keep in mind I am 'basically single' with no kids and no mortgage...

And one day I would like to open my own '3rd Gen Specific' and domestic car Hotrod / Customization shop...

A museum of sorts I guess it would be. Hylton has a huge head start on me already so I've got a lot of catching up to do.

When the time comes I will be totally forthcoming about this car...

Totally disagree. I dynoed a similar stroked 383 with stock 69 441 heads and got 404HP out of it. It had head work and roller 1.5's on it but this motor has better heads, more lift (1.6 rockers) and better ignition than mine had. Acceld Z would know for sure.

Actually, I pretty much defer to Carm when it comes to engines, both practical and theoretical.

Really, I don't know **** from tar. I'm just good a pretending that I do. Maybe i'm not even good at pretending.......

Hylton......those 441's are VERY close in #'s with the Performer heads...realize that. Your talking about one of the best flowing heads to ever come out of GM for a SBC in that era, the only downside was the larger chambers if you had a smaller cube motor = having to use a dome piston = more timing.

Also more lift doesnt add duration. You still have an XE274 cam, with an INTAKE thats meant for a higher rpm motor & cam. So now you've got a cam that turns on around 2000RPM with that added compression, an intake that turns on around 3500 rpm, heads that turn on around 2000rpm...and a converter that turns on around 2200rpm or less......can you tell there's a problem somewhere?

All your doing right now is killing your bottom end completely, part of your midrage & gaining (probably almost nothing) in the top end.

Been there, done that, many motors i've fixed....common problem = mismatch.

I'll edit my post, sorry dude.

Yeah, Campbell Ford. Go there and explain your situation to the service advisor. Don't mention anything that would even remotely suggest they do something illegal. Just say you want the carb tuned to pass an e-test.

Reaper if your in Ottawa, hit me up this summer & i'll help you make the most with what you got.

TPI is cool, but i think you'll definetly make more hp/tq with a good RPM intake & carb.

No, I have nothing to do with that. I just provide as much encouragement as possible during the construction/break-in stage and then consolation when the carnage ensues

It's gonna work perfectly this time. The guy he has doing the engine has a great rep

Absolutely. Thanks for the offer. I already have two appointments of sort.

One is my general mech., who I have mentioned before, who is much better with carb than TPI...

The second is our mutual friend Ian R., who just bought a place out in Kemptville. I'll be taking him my IROC as well and see what we're going to do with that engine.

Reaper....i know Ian VERY well...wasnt sure if he was the guy you were talking about before. I've towed him up to MTL to race a few times now.

Ian is very good as well, i would trust him 110% before 99.9999% of the general tech's in this city when it comes to maximizing what you have.

That is quite interesting...
Engine bay looks a tad rough. For the right price though.
I wonder what happened to the TA? Those TTA's are fetching a rather nice dollar right now.

It makes me laugh because I know he just might be willing.

I'd like to see that drivetrain in a clean 82 plain jane Camaro. Sleeper city. Evryone would hear the V6 and blow it off as a nothing car.
