Have fun with this, if you haven't done it already Neil, lol.
I swapped the gears with the rear still on the car. Took pretty much 3 days. had to have the bearings pressed off, and new ones on. Then I had to rent a stronger impact, and axle puller. I also had to borrow a bearing puller to pull the old races out. Ones was in hella tight.
BTW, I followed the steps on the board here and,
They talk about torqueing the pinion nut to 125-150 ft-lbs. Well, with various different spacers, that much toruque makes the pinion too tight, and it won't budge. So after trial and error in spacing, and probably about 80 ft-lbs to the locking pinion nut, everything is nice and smooth and little backlash, maybe ..010" which is what it felt like before I took the old ones out anyways.
hehe, and the crush sleeve that comes in the kit, lol, doesn't compress at all. Just for a try, we tried putting it in the vice in between 2 sockets to see if we could get it to compress a little, cause both our impact and the supposed 400ft-lbs one that I rented wouldn't put a dent in the spacer, anyways the vice and 1 socket blew apart like a shotgun shell. I have yet to find the socket pieces, and it broke the #3 vice length wise.
Am I glad I didn't become a mechanic for a living. I would have burned a few cars to the ground in anger by now. lol

Great,
Glad to hear you got them in there.
I got the bearings off and on at home, and it was a bitch!
I have the Ratech FORD 8" solid spacer to put in with the gears and a TA cover to make it slick proof. Drive shaft or clutch (still) will be the weak link after that.
Mine is half together as I can't seem to find the time to work on it..can't wait to drive the car with these in there though.
