Re: '86 L69

vin decoder

if you look either in the console glove box or one of the rear hatch compartments, you'll hopefully find a sticker with all the rpo codes on it. you can plug those codes into this rpo decoder to find out how your bird left the factory...

If it is a L69 car then it is pretty damn rare.

??? L69's in 1986 V8-equipped Firebirds were the most common ones around.

Open the hood- you have a carburetor on it? Then it's either an LG4 or an L69. Look at the Vin #- 8th digit/character- if it's an "H" it's an LG4, if it's a "G" it's an L69. If it happens to be an "F" then it's a TPI- no carb. All are 305s. Being that the car is 21 years old- the VIN may indicate nothing useful anyways-21 years is a long time in which the engine could have been swapped.

Go have a look how many L69 (305 H.O) T/A's were made. There were tons of LG4 T/As in 86 but very little L69s. TPI in 86 was even more common then the L69. I have yet to even see a 86 T/A in person that didn't have a LG4 (in canada anyway). If I ever found one even a 85 T/A L69 I would restore to stock specs and make it a garage queen.

"Only 26 1986 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am models were made with the 305 H.O L69. Discontinued because of fuel boiling."

Now that is rare

Does it have a functional hood scoop?

I don't think TAs every came with a dual snorkle so I'm wondering what they did for the L69 air intake if anything.

Re: '86 L69

You guys are right- I stand corrected.

However- I'm not so sure that "rare" in this case necessarily equates to "valuable".

84's were the last to have that scoop. One year of factory either 85 or 86 came with the dual snorkel air cleaner like the camaro. I am thinking 85.

Not possible. The "power buldge" cowl type hood was on 82-84 t/as and later used on formulas. 85-92 trans am's all got the same hood with the non fuctional scoops up front.
