I got me a project

Many years ago I bought a '87 IROC. When the kid was born we had to give it up (I know stupid) for the mini-van. Anyhow, long story short the kid is out of college now and I found another one to restore. From first glances it doesn't seem too bad but upon closer inspection it'll need a lot of work on the underside. I think someone parked it in a salt pile.

It's got potential just needs some TLC to bring it back to original.

This is the one I bought in '87.

So the restoration list looks something like this....
  1. sub-frame connectors
  2. rear trailing arms
  3. floor pans
  4. inner rocker panels
  5. probably fuel & brake lines
  6. carpet
  7. seats (looking for decent set of grey cloth F&R)
  8. door panels
  9. decals
  10. OEM stereo (already have it)
There's a giant rat box stereo in it now. Alpine deck, Alpine disc changer, Sony amp & cross over plus two 12" Crankenstein drivers that gotta go.

That's about it I think, it'll get us back to square one anyways. Eventually it'll need more body work (plenty of little scratches and some dodgy body work by a PO).

Looking forward to picking your brains fella's!

Welcome to TGO! Looks like it's got a lot of potential. Good luck with the project.

I'm hoping that by the time I'm done it'll be identical. Biggest problem right now is the tax man just up and bit me on the *** for $12K which will set this project back on it's heels a little bit.

Re: I got me a project

The next piece of the puzzle has fallen into place. We picked up our Lincoln Mig-Pak 140 yesterday. We'll soon be diving into this project so pics will follow soon!

I'm just a lil' perturbed about what we might find lurking under the carpet!

Re: I got me a project

Ouch. At least you are prepared. Seems like patches aren't that bad to do if you know how to weld. Luckily for me, I live in Cali and rust isn't a problem at all. Definitely looks like your old one. Are you going to get the same decal kit your old one had?

Re: I got me a project

It's a sad fact of life but up here Bully they use a ton of salt on the roads in the winter. Even if you don't drive your car on the winter roads it gets everywhere and eventually with time and humidity it takes its toll.

My kid just finished trade school in welding/metal fabrication so this'll be a father/son project. I can weld a bit but have never used a MIG welder. It doesn't look that hard and I've got some small pieces to practice on. We'll do what we gotta do to get it on the road this summer. Maybe next year do a bit more and replace the floors etc. I'm thinking I'm going to find some nasty stuff when I pull the rear clip off!

As for stripes, I've got a cheap set of reproduction stripes for now. I'd really like to change the color of the interior to tan from grey. If I can find the right seats and door panels then I'll switch. That way I can go to the gold accent stripes instead of silver. Which, by the way was what I thought I had before but in looking at some old photos I was wrong. I like the tan interior better, just have to find a decent set of seats and door panels.

Re: I got me a project

Rocky's got his stripes back. Oh well even if I can't drive it yet it'll look purdy!

The large door decal was a b*tch! Too much soap in the spray bottle I think. There's a couple of wobblies but I can live with it. Two, maybe three, years down the road it'll all get stripped for a full body & paint.

Magnaflow cat-back exhaust showed up today. Will be picking up the UMI frame connectors and trailing arms on Saturday. Rocky'll get a new car cover too. Too many birds sh*ttin' on my flashy car!

Just about 3 hrs from start to finish. Arms got a lil' tired after awhile. I found the shaded side easier to see than the side in direct sunlight. This kit was from AutoGrafics (www.autografics.com/) Good kit, reasonably priced. I think the molded stripes will be better after the body & paint though.
