Here's the scenario. 1987 5.7 lt TPI. This year (and older) no longer requires an e-Test in Ontario. My questions are:

1. Can I legally remove the smog pump and other emissions equipment?
2. Will I require a specially programmed chip if I do?
3. Can I expect a performance increase if I do?

Anybody know? I'll start my research tomorrow through the MTO channels.

 

There's a lot of post about this and many many points of view on it , where I live in Pa USA you don't need e-test on anything 1975 -earlier or under 5000 miles a year but yes the BIG but they do a visual inspection , meaning all smog equipment must be in place and "appear " to function . What I would do before you go tearing stuff off is find out from your local inspection station what the rules are especially since your in a different country .As for performance your not going to gain a ton but it will help some.

 

the answer is no, if you do you can face a fine of 380 per piece missing. Ontario does have road side checks and these are the people who will give you the fines. Chances are they will also pull your plates.

 

That's pretty much what I thought. There's not much on the MTO site. I was scanning the e-Bay listings and I saw a smog pump delete pulley which got me thinking. Oh well! ::Shrug::

 

last poster is right, It's in the legislation (if you'd like a fun read...) all orig smog equipment is supposed to be on car and working. Typically they'll just pull you and write a ticket for $365 (current) and won't do a smog test but they can if you want to be an ***. That gets you into the whole diagnostic and $450 pass/fail loop. Good news is prov. gov't employees frequent main roads near 400 series hwys looking for commercial vehicles and obvious violators (like hot rods). Plus they don't work nights or weekends. If it's your daily driver, bright and loud, you'd be crazy to start yanking stuff off. For the rest of us, it's not likely.

 

You can't legally remove it.
You won't get any more performance by removing anything but a catalytic convertor, BUT only if it is bad (generally) ie plugged. Clears a LOT of crap out from under the hood though. Non AIR headers also look a lot better.
I have heard of guys in TO getting pulled over and getting fined, but not in Ottawa.

 

Two stories emerged recently while I was visiting a friend In Whitby.
Both invloved vehicles being pulled over after leaving an afternoon car show and subjected to roadside visual inspections. One vehicle, an 81 Monte Carlo was popped for no catalytic convertor. I don't have specific info regarding the other vehicle however I do know he was fined for removed smog equipment as well.
This is broad daylight stuff with no racing or stunting action involved. The Monte I know is an obvious hot rod, with custom paint and a cowl hood.
Makes me nervous. I have to say my 86 IROC is not entirely compliant.

 

under federal law all emission equipment must remain on the car and in working order.
i have a 71 lotus - never had smog equipment so i dont need it.
but any car build after 1975 what ever smog equipment your came with new mus still have it.
the kicker is it is a federal felony to remove and you can lose the car, get his with a 10,000.00 fine and can be sentenced to federal prison - especially if you get a tree hugger as your federal judge.

 

Builds a case for a sixties muscle car project car doesn't it.

 

it sure does.
my brother has a very clean old school nova prior to smog. under the hood you have wires for the plugs, battery, water hose for radiator, and space, miles of open space, and plenty of room to work too.
but you can get hi flow cats up to 3 inches internal, and if you not in california 49 state legal is ok and it does help the environment a little.
never been hot for the air system, i think the motor takes up some hp but not much.

 

Agreed. Was talkin' with a mechanic buddy last night at the get together and he said the same thing. He's just put a 5.7 Lt Hemi in a PT Cruiser!

Anyhow we got to talkin' about my next project which is likely to be a '70 Duster with a modern Hemi. I had a '70 340 six pack way back in the day. I've got my eye on the car now and it's a slant six model. I'm not sure the ole' lady is too keen on this idea! My next project was supposed to be a 31' diesel trawler (boat)!

both my cars have all smog equip stripped. 86 GMC Sierra with an SBC, headers, duals, flowmasters, and a buch of other stuff. and my 85 IROC. I have never been pinched for it but it sounds like its just a matter of time.
