sub-frame connectors

I am planning on installing a set of sfc's from vendor undetermined (any suggestions on vendors would be welcome) in March/2002.

I was planning on using Rudy Held's shop. Can anyone tell me if I have to remove the interior ? Seats, carpets, etc ? Any words from the wise who have done this before ?

thx in advance,
RP.

Sub frame connectors are quite easy to install if you have any welding experience.(my friend just went to a shop with them bolted in place, and they welded em' up for him for next to nothing!) You don't have to move or remove any interior components. Competition Engineering has a pair for $80 through Summit.

I hope to purchase a set of SFC's this year as well, since I own a convertible my choices are limited to 2 manufacturers (Bummer), and they are expensive(in my case). I have posted a similar question elswhere on this board and the general consensus was that the carpet should be lifted off of the floor(with a block of wood or something like that ) in the area where the weld will be placed. From what I understand a good weld will generate enough heat to damage the carpet and padding. This is what I've been told.

I've got a set of MAC SFC's installed. They do the trick and the price was right. And no carpet needs to be removed...they get welded to the frame rails, not the floor boards.

Now thats the kind of sub-frame story I was looking for. No carpet work and a littl ewelding. Any idea who sells "MAC SFCs" in Southern Ontario region ?

Did they make much of a difference with rattles, creaking and moaning ? I have t-roofs.

thx, RP.

I have narrowed my selection down to the Global West sfc's or the MAC sfc's. I believe the Comp Engineering version requires floorpan modifications, but I could be wrong.

I'm thinking Global West SFCs and a set of their springs as well as some other odds and ends this summer.

I found their tech people to be knowledgable and willing to talk to you for a bit.

MAC SFC are a dime-a-dozen in SoOnt...at least that's what I found. You can get them at numerous shops (I got my including install at Master Performance in Brampton) and I believe all Performance Improvements shops sell them as well. The best part is MAC has set up standardized pricing for their products, so no matter where you go, they're all the same price (or at least they are supposed to be)

I did notice a very very small difference in stiffness as far as cornering. The biggest improvement was on the highway...it cut down on the vibration big time. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Hey Zedder I thought that the convertibles came with factory installed frame connectors. As a matter of fact one of the suppliers of aftermaket connectors was bragging that their connectors were just as good as the stock convertible connectors.

What gives???

I think the convertibles have beefier side rails than the coupes, but thats it. They do not have SFC's but they should have been installed at ASC. My car flexes like a wet noodle when going over speed bumps and such. Rattles like hell when the top is up. I hope SFC's will stop the annoying squeeking problem I have where the top latches lock down the top, soooooo annnoyyying!!

shake rattle and roll...

Yah, I test drove an '89 convertible way back when it was brand new. I remember being very surprised at the movement in front of the windshield. Figured it needed a strut brace minimum.

T-roof cars are somewhat better but still need SFCs. I am planning on getting a set installed at Rudy Helds after spring thaw. One thing that really drives me nuts about these 3rd gens is the creek and rattle from t-roofs.

Last I was at Rudy Helds they were about $200CDN which surprised me as I thought they would alot more $$$. Now that the CDN buck is tanked and given that the MACs are imported I'll bet they are going to be ALOT more.

Installation was extra of course.

Yup...I paid $200 for mine last summer. I agree, they may have went up a couple bucks, but probably not too much.

Even if they have gone up in price a little, that's a great deal. I think I just made my choice. To bad I just blew the last of my $ on a bottle heater. Oh well, maybe next month. Or the month after that, or the month after that..................
