Advance the timing ?

I was reading in one of the car mags, Hi-Perf Chevy I think, that a tuner trick was to advance the timing on the TPI motor by 12 degrees. This makes for alot more torque down low -- or so says the mag writer.

Can anyone verify this ? Has any of you tried this and had any meaningful/positive results ?

Thx in advance,
RP.

Is the article refering to base timing? The factory setting is 6 degrees. Going past 8-10 degrees probably would not be a good idea. I have an article from High Tech Performance that goes over the procedure and results. Actually I have 2 articles. They both deal with mass air cars but the results will be the same on a speed density car. If you want I can scan them and send them out.

As far as I know it was 12 degrees total advance so an increase of an additional 6 degrees. Yes, thx, please send the articles.

Do you run your car advanced ?

I know with my PRM Chip, I have to advance timing until I get a tad detonation, for a split second, shifting into secind, then back it off a tad. I have no idea what degree this would be. I'll ask what my buddy put his ad.. or... if BILLZ88350 reads this, tell us what your timing is set at.

I di some good testing last year at the track one day. I started out with the base timing set at 6* and made a run. I then tried it at 8, 10 and 12*. I found for my combo that 8* worked best for me. I didn't have a scan tool to check knock counts but went on the premise that my best mph was with it at 8*.

The only way you can change anything other than base timing is through PROM modifications. When I just had the basic bolt-ons I had the base timing set at 8 degrees. That was with an old HyperTech stage 3 chip. 8 degrees seemed to be the "sweet spot" where the ECM wasn't pulling timing out due to knock counts. I had a ton of help from some techs at Jack May Pontiac/Buick when doing this. I wouldn't consider taking timing past 8 degrees without being able to watch knock counts. I bent a bunch of valves before I had any opportunity to experiment with the timing this fall. The guy's at FastChip said it would perform best at 6 degrees. I will scan and send the articles tonight. Did I speak to you on the phone this past summer?

Yes we spoke on the phone. I was trying to buy your runners but was toooooo late, they were already sold. Then I was going to buy your heads but decided to keep my 305 instead of upgrading to a 350 which would have required your heads. Got any other SLP goodies for sale ?
