the latest from Jacobs Electronics
I called Jacobs Electronics yesterday to check out their latest offerings for my Formula. I can pick up an Ultra Team for about $409 USD or $584 CDN at today's exchange rate.
Better yet I will be in US in a few weeks on business and can pick up an Ultra Team from a local dealer and bring it back with me for some ...uuhhh... savings at the border.
Here are the specs for a '91 LB9 TPI with Ultra Team under optimal conditions and according to the Jacob dyno:
- 15% improvement in mpg which is about 21mpg to 24mpg.
- 10% increase in HP which is from 230hp to 253hp.
- 8 to 10% increase in torque which is from 300lbs to 324 or 330lbs torque.
The Ultra Team includes the computer, coil, ignition wires and all wiring (power, coil, ground, etc). BTW: those numbers are for a stock LB9 5-speed, no headers, no trick cams, heads or chips.
Interesting eh ? Having done a Jacobs install before I KNOW they do not speak with fork tongue -- the power improvements are real and I am really looking forward to the increase in mileage. Add a Performance Resource style chip and the mileage should improve even more.
Just sharing the good news,
RP.

I have a Jacob's Omni-Pack up for Sale. It's the coil and ignition in one unit. Wires right up to HEI, no splicing, and comes with cap, instructions and all the wiring. I needed to upgrade to a rev limiter. I noticed a difference once I installed it, car not only started faster but ran much smoother throughout the RPMs.

the tach was a problem

I used an ACCEL coil with the Jacobs ignition which was not too wise -- I swapped out the ACCEL for the stock GM coil and the tach behaved itself. Later I went to a Jacobs coil and things got even better.
I'll definitely fill you in once it is installed.

One piece of advice that I give out here, something that palric had to discover for himself, is never mix and match a ignition box with another manufacturer's components. The was an article several months ago in Chevy High Performance where they tested everything from MSD to Jacobs and found that they did not mix well at all. If you buy a Jacob's box, get the Jacob's coil to go with it.
