@SS kicked by 4.6L MERCURY

Well I raced a 96 4.6 L cougar tonight and things are looking bad! From a dead stop to 55MPH I was at the back of HER front fender.

I had a code 22, 23 and 43 , but now gone. SES light goes out during race and now I have 13 and the PITA 34 I also have a rough idle and it sometimes doesnt want to start right (especially after car has sit for a few minutes and at operating temp). Idle is erratic ranging from 500-1100, but never dies.

Primary fan (driver side) is on when ignition is on and never shuts off. Secondary doesnt come on at all, even at 240* Put in new CFS and CTS a couple days ago.

SES Bulb test is unusally fast and sometimes it doesnt bulb test at all when I turn ignition on. It diagnoses fine.

I searched the boards and found an array of sensors(TPS and MAF and relays(MAF burn off and MAF power) that it could be...

This car is a mess and I still wont own anything else.

Oh, I have an 87 L98
Suggestions...

Check your grounds, with that many different codes either your car is really screwed up or the engine block isnt grounded properly. Theres a whole bunch on the back of the heads, I have missed those before myself.

Dont get too mad about the 4.6. I've G-teched our 97 at 14.8@99... that would give quite a few F-bodies a run for their money and beat a whole bunch, like mine for instance.

I agree, that's a lot of codes; have you been working on the engine recently (always start there).

In addition to checking grounds, check the connector in the orange wire near the battery that supplies power to the ECM.

I just diagnosed a bad MAF in my '88 Vette that didn't throw any codes. The symptoms went from occasional "starvation" to severe surging at idle with occasional stalling; I confirmed it by subing the MAF from the IROC.

Check the TPS voltage at the idle position with a DMM to see if all is well there.

Oh, and please make some mods to that L98 so you don't get beat by Cougers any more.'

I know I let us all down in that street event and I too am very disappointed.

The TPI engine is a recent conversion from LG4. So I have something screwed up. Im waiting on the rest of my laptops parts to come in and I have already made the interface cable. I am trying to be as patient as possible with this car until the laptop parts arrive. Then maybe I can use craig's program and see what the heck is going on with her.

Hopefully, I will find something when I scan the car and make repairs. It is then that I will seek out the POS Cougar and reestablish what car is #1. WHEN, NOT IF, this happens I will update, hopefully it will be very soon.
