Couple of questions

Hey everybody ,
I've got a couple of questions for you. Here's whats up. Right now I've got the plenum off my 305 tpi, I'm putting on an AFPR and I am going to grind down the blocks in front of the EGR holes, and maybe try to match up the runners to the plenum a little. I am also going to ditch my Hyperjunk chip and go with a 180* thermostat so I can just adjust the timing myself. Here's my questions;

1) I know everyones car is different, but what would be a good baseline to start off with on the fuel pressure?

2) Those of you who have manually adjusted your timing, what did you set it to?

3)Also those of you who have done some porting to your intake, do you have any advice for me. Anything that I should do or definitely not do?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice,
Jason

1. i would hook up a fuel pressure gauge to your car with the stock regualtor hooked up and see what your car has in its stock form. that would be your baseline. increase in 2 psi increments until the best perfromance is achieved. this is not easy when trying to set it on the street and even the drag strip. best place is a chassis dyno. list all your mods to include which chip you are running and maybe i or someone else can help you further with the fuel pressure.

2. stock timing is set at 6 degrees BTDC. this is another one of thse mods that is best played with on a chassis dyno. if you only have basic bolt ons then i would go no higher then 8-10 BTDC.

3.i ported and gasket matched my plenum, runners, and intake and the best advice i can give you is
1 clean all parts before reassembling
2 get the right bits to do the job on aluminum parts(single carbide bit) there isnt much you can do to the stock runners. the only place to play with them is at the top and bottom on the flanges. the tubes are real thin and shouldnt be messed withget new gasketa if your tear and place them in the area you plan to gasket match. dont go overbaard thinking that more is better. some people say that they actually lost power from doing to
much.i would not make the intake holes going into the head bigger then the holes on the head. this will make serious air terbulane(sp?) of the incoming air. if you are using the stock heads then ther eisnt much port work you can do without ported the heads as well. my best bet for you if your want to keep it simple is to remove the casting walls in the plenum, gasket match all parts to one another and open up the port holes slightly where ever you can. remember, you dont want a smaller hole after a bigger hole.I.E. big runner port work and small head ports. you will be wasting your time.. also you will never get a stock intake to perform like the aftermarket. any other questions just ask.

Start at 42 psi. go up until you lose power then back it down 4 psi. But 44 to 46 will probably be best. I set my timing at 6 BTDC. I would do as BOTTLED suggested and don't go over 10. You have to look at total advance not just at idle.

One more question. Will I have any trouble running a 180* thermostat on the my stock PROM? My regulator should arrive wednesday, I will also be getting the last few items I need to port the plenum and put her back together. I've run a best of 15.38 in the 1/4. I'll let you guys know what I get when I get it done and get the timing and pressure adjusted.
