Aftermarket fan and engine light

I get an engine light after about an hour of driving. I attributed this to the fact that I have a Hypertech chip that optimizes torque. I also have a 160-degree thermostat. Last year my fan died, so I replaced it with an after-market one. I ran the power from a power point in the fuse box through a switch on the dash. That way I can turn it off and on as I need to. The ground is hooked into my stereo ground, which goes right to the battery. The wiring to the original fan got all dry-rotted so, I couldn’t put in a stock fan now unless I wanted to spend a chunk of change to get all new wiring. I’m not sure if I even have temp controlled fan switch or not. Even tough I have a 160-degree thermostat with the Hypertech switch, could a lack of temp switch be causing the computer to malfunction and give me the engine light? My car seems to be running great. (But the engine light gets annoying)
