How do I get my heads off?

I tore down the whole top end and I want to know if I can get the heads off with out taking the accesorys and brackets out of the car? If this is posible how do I do it? There are these studs things sticking out of the heads that the brackets are bolted to and at the end they look like torx bits. What is the purpose of the tips?

I suppose it could be done, but it'd be much easier to just suck it up and unbolt the accessories. The studs you mentioned, take an inverted style torx bit, the size is E8, I believe. If you insist on removing the heads w/o taking off the accessory brackets, you'll have to remove the studs, along with the other bolts that hold the brackets to the heads. The brackets will stay in place because they're bolted to the engine block. But again, it'd be easier to just remove the accessories. It'll take like 5 minutes. Why the torx tips on the studs? Probably is the best tip they could put on it to make the studs removable. Torx has more surface area than, say, a allen head, so the tips are less likely to strip out.
